Hi folks, i was surfing in the internet and on ut2k4 sites, when i discovered this mod, which is still in development. But look at the screens, its for ut2004 but all the models and textures are stolen! Stolen from halo pc i think, i suggest the sounds will be stolen too.

Is this legal bungie? Just look at the screens and their site, everything looks exact the same.

Look at those screens:

they even stole the vehicles!

Do they have a contract with bungie, being allowed to use all their copyright protected content?

This is a Halo/ut2004 conversion that's being made. I'm pretty sure that it's all legal.

Hm im pretty sure it isn't, since they are using original models, from bungie, they are breaking the copyright law. I think this is criminal.

That means people making mods based on games or movie are also breaking the law just like all the countless mods right? Nope, since they're not getting money and they're using their free time, it is legal and safe.

I think you dont understand me, of course its legal making a mod thats a remake of a game, since it doesnt have the original name.

Normally mod makers rebuild the models or remake the textures from games (HOMEFRONT look at it), but in this case, they are taking the original halo models, the ones that are on the game disc, and they dont use it for a mod for "halo", they import them into another game, thats illegal.

True but on the other hand, that's like saying taking a screenshot is illegal because it's using someone else's "artwork" which just happens to be a frame in a game.

Considering they're not planning to make money from this, it's not going to effect anyone financially, significantly Bungie (unlike if they were selling pirate copies of Halo). With this in mind, and also that it's all in the interest of fun, I think we should just let them go ahead with it. Obviously Bungie are going to be credited for their original game, and they're making no secret about the source of their models. If they lied and said they made them, or that they were original material, That would be wrong.

Heyyo,

I see what you're saying, it does sound like it's illegal, but as long as it's freeware I think it's ok.

Look at that Halathon, it takes the Halo's models (well, screenshots cause it's 2d, lol) and puts it in marathon. It even has ripped sounds. Now, I havn't heard of them getting sued, so I'm sure this will be fine too. :)

Oh! speaking of which... if you get the Counter-Strike Realisim update, the final edition, it's got a few sounds ripped outta Max Payne. It's a free mod for CS, and I also havn't heard from them getting sued.

BUT, on the other hand... Have you guy's ever watched fensler Films Public Service Announcements? He took some GI Joe tv show scenes, and did hallarious voice overs. Well, those are illegal. Cause he broke copyright, and apparently sold those on DVD's. If you go to his main site, you can see the letter he recieved from Matel. :p

I think you might still have a chance to get them at http://www.ebaumsworld.com I highly reccomend, it's great spoofs of GI Joe. :)

[EDIT]
OHHH! an even better example! look at RedVsBlue, all its material is ripped STRAIGHT outta Halo. The only changes is voice overs. NOW, I havn't heard of them gettin' sued, infact, I think Bungie encourages people to watch them. So I think Bungie's a good company, n' knows that some things were made for the enjoyment of the masses. So, here's to you Bungie, keep bein' a fan-friendly company. =D

If you read their site, they' have said they've emailed Bungie and MS trying to find out if it legal. they haven't gotten any responses back. So they are going forward with it.

Heyyo,

Yeah, check my new posting, I found another conversion but this time to the GTA engine. But they're remaking all the models, but I think they might rip the sounds... only 1 way to find out... n' that's to wait and see.

The GTA engine? As in Grand Theft Auto: Blood Gulch? lol. What's the point in that the GTA engine is surely worse than the Halo engine considering it's based on the lame-ass PS2 console.
