They had it before, from what I can tell from This picture. Why did it go? I think it would be quite handy personally. Please leave your feedback on this.

Seriously, don't take me seriously.

Underground Pleasure - aren't you a bit curious?

What's the point?

  • 01.06.2007 5:48 PM PDT

I heard that it caused elitism, or members thinking that they're better than other members. I'd like it to appear though.

2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Didn't someone say it never actually caused elitism but people spammed a lot just to get their count up?

But spammers get blacklisted.

If there was a blacklisting for any period of time= -100 posts that would be good. And what about a rule of something like GameFAQs? (For example, 0-30 posts you can do 15 posts an hour, and make 2 threads an hour, 30-60 it goes up to 30 posts and 5 threads, 60-100=50 posts a day, and infinite threads, 100+ posts will be no posting restrictions. How does everyone feel about that? It would cut down on the spam majorly.

EDIT: The above is just a rough estimate as to what should be acceptable, it so please, if you're going to rate the idea, rate it by the actual idea, and not the examples of posts per day given.

People would make even more low content posts than they do already to boost their number (and e-peen)

Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Why implement something that would have no point? Of course, the natural answer is "I just figured it would be cool to know." But one cannot be truly interested in a piece of knowledge if he refuses to work in order to obtain it. I've seen people who are willing to count their posts in order to know how many they've made.

And then, of course, what of the people who see post count as a status symbol? Forget just the potential elitism itself, and think of the spamming that could occur because of it.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

I don't think it should be under your name, but I do think there should be a way you can find out your post count. I'm mighty curious as to how many posts I've made since I joined.

Not a whole lot of good can come from a post count.
Edit: People already think they're better then everybody else if they've been around B.net for a few years.

Yes, spammers could develop out of it, but if you check on other forums that have this tool, (GameFAQs for example, sorry for always mentioning it, but it's the only major Forum that I know that has this feature.) they have little to no spam. Besides, spammers could always be blacklisted, and be penalized a certain amount of PP(I might be using this phrase a bit, by PP I mean post points, meaning Total Posts), resulting in them not being able to create spam because they have a small amount of total posts, and as I said above people with a small amount of total posts should be able to create only very limited posts per day/hour. (Apologies if that didn't completely make sense.)

And I would be interested in finding out stuff like that, to see who is most involved on the Bungie forums, but there is no way I am going to count each and every individual post that I had made. That would take hours.

Is that screenshot not photochopped? I could have sworn we had post counts removed before the New Hotness was put in place.

Edit: Of course it's bloody photochopped... didn't see the top right buttons...

No, it's not photoshopped. One second, I'll prove it. =P

EDIT: Alright, this is gonna be quite lengthy, but this is a quote from the first Sticky in the New Mombasa forum.

New Mombasa's Guidelines:

# Please DO NOT advertise your group or clan here. You can use The Classifieds for that.
# No petitions.
# Do not link to adult content or to sites that contain information on any type of software piracy.
# Impersonating forum moderators and/or Bungie employees is strictly prohibited. Do not break this rule. You will be banned. No warning will be issued.
# Bumping is illegal. Breaking this law has high consequences. Such as but not limited to: assasination by ninja, hippo licking, and/or complete forum thread annihilation. Or we will most likely just lock your topic. Don't bump!
# Xbox hacking/modding discussions will not be permitted on any of the Bungie.Net forums.
# Don't Flame each other. Use your manners and common sense. If you disagree with someone, do so gracefully.
# Noob, Newbie, N00b, and any other variants on the word newb are hereby banned from use on this forum. Any user who violates this rule will be put to death.
# No political discussion of any kind will be tolerated on the forums. These kinds of conversations almost always devolve into insult contests.
# If you want to show off your madz skillz in a video, please link it in your signature. Threads with videos can be deleted without warning. (details here)

See the one that's bolded/underlined? Search for that in the New Mombasa sticky, click the word "Death", it will send you to the picture that I showed you.

But then, a little work is all a spammer needs to cause problems. A post counter doesn't help things. It can only make problems worse. People make worthless posts now, but what happens when you have a post counter, something that encourages people to post more? You get people posting for the sake of posting, even if it really has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

And I would be interested in finding out stuff like that, to see who is most involved on the Bungie forums, but there is no way I am going to count each and every individual post that I had made. That would take hours.

Who is most involved? I can tell you right now that post count only shows the people who have made the most posts, not the people involved the most in the community. I can make a thousand worthless posts, but I'm no more involved than a person who hasn't made a single post as of yet.

And as for the "I just want to know" stuff, why not just start counting your posts starting now? People have done it, so why don't you? You can get a rough estimate of how many posts you have made before, and then start from said estimate. They say that you can appreciate the fruits of your labor more if you work hard, so maybe counting your own posts would give you a sense of self-satisfaction that just viewing the number itself couldn't do.

I've challenged my beliefs. What is the book about?

I find that this is usually untrue. If religious people honestly, diligently and intelligently challenged their beliefs, there would be no religious people.

No, Why would you prevent people from posting. Just leave it how it is.

This has been endlessly discussed, and shot down every time.
I suggest we add a 'No "I want a Post Counter" topics' post to the stickies.

As Gendo said, people would (inadvertedly?) spam to get a higher number of posts.

It would be a superficial feature anyways. Something that other sites can work with, but then again, Bungie.net isn't like the other sites ;-)

Wait there's an actual debat about post counts? I thought for something to be a debate it has to have both sides with valid arguments.
