"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Yes, spammers could develop out of it, but if you check on other forums that have this tool, (GameFAQs for example, sorry for always mentioning it, but it's the only major Forum that I know that has this feature.) they have little to no spam. Besides, spammers could always be blacklisted, and be penalized a certain amount of PP(I might be using this phrase a bit, by PP I mean post points, meaning Total Posts), resulting in them not being able to create spam because they have a small amount of total posts, and as I said above people with a small amount of total posts should be able to create only very limited posts per day/hour. (Apologies if that didn't completely make sense.)
But then, a little work is all a spammer needs to cause problems. A post counter doesn't help things. It can only make problems worse. People make worthless posts now, but what happens when you have a post counter, something that encourages people to post more? You get people posting for the sake of posting, even if it really has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
And I would be interested in finding out stuff like that, to see who is most involved on the Bungie forums, but there is no way I am going to count each and every individual post that I had made. That would take hours.
Who is most involved? I can tell you right now that post count only shows the people who have made the most posts, not the people involved the most in the community. I can make a thousand worthless posts, but I'm no more involved than a person who hasn't made a single post as of yet.
And as for the "I just want to know" stuff, why not just start counting your posts starting now? People have done it, so why don't you? You can get a rough estimate of how many posts you have made before, and then start from said estimate. They say that you can appreciate the fruits of your labor more if you work hard, so maybe counting your own posts would give you a sense of self-satisfaction that just viewing the number itself couldn't do.
