As was pointed out earlier, Disney have basically raided the cultural treasure chest one too many times and used up all of the folk tales and classic stories they can animate and slap a trademark on.
Also, their traditional audience, young kids, are getting more cynical having been blasted by low grade 24 hour cartoon channels such as Cartoon Network, and don't see the point in going to see a cartoon at the cinema when they just can sit at home on their asses watching Dexter's Laboratory or whatever else they stick on there.
And then there's Pixar and Dreamworks. Films from these two have stolen Disney's thunder by being better written, and better looking than anything Disney has put out itself recently. Most of Disney's recent profits have been made by being Pixar's distributor and licensor, and if Pixar leave, they will probably struggle. The decline started when it stopped concentrating on animation and decided to slug it out with people like News Corporation in an attempt to become an all-round media giant.
