I was thinking about the different factions in the game recently:
The Flood
UNSC
The Covenant Separatists
The Covenant Loyalists
The Machines
And then I thought about how the Covenant interacted with the Forerunner machines. In Halo: CE, we saw Spec Ops Covenant forces fighting Sentinels on the POA on several occassions. This struck me as odd, considering how the goals of the Covenant and the goals of the machines in the original game were one in the same - to activate Halo. This, and they had no real reason to be fighting each other.
Now, in Halo 2, whilst entering the hangar on the Gas Mine above Threshold, one Elite remarks:
"Sentinels, the holy warriors of the Sacred Rings. Why have they sided with these heretics?"
Now, I can see why the Covenant would fight the Sentinels here, because they have sided with the Heretics. But why did the Elite say what he did? If the Sentinels are "holy warriors of the sacred Rings", why were the Covenant fighting them in Halo: CE?
Now, the Sentinels were helping the Heretics cart around gas canisters, or something like that. Once the Flood outbreak occurs, it can be assumed the primary goal of the machines (particularly the Monitor) would be to prevent the outbreak, yet they engage Covenant forces as well. Once the situation gets out of hand, and the monitor decides to activate the ring, they still fight against the Covenant, despite both parties wanting to activate Halo, and having the Flood to deal with. Any ideas?
