I just have several quick questions about Bungie's filter:

(notice: sorry for bypassing it a little)

1. Why is it that when you add on to some blocked words it won't be blocked anymore, but on others the word is still blocked? Example:

-blam!-. Raped. The first word was "raped" without the "d". Whenever I add a letter on it uncensored....

Here's another example:
-blam!-. -blam!-n. The first one was "S:hit" without the "n". Here it is still censored.

2. Why are g@y, r@ape, and s3xual censored? Sex, as in gender, isn't censored, but anyone could just use gender anyway. So if sex isn't censored, why is it if you add "ual"? The other two are opinions, really; one is a simple crime and the other is something people actually are. Wouldn't a -blam!- person be offended is what they are (ghey) was censored?

Hope someone can answer these. Thanks.

You say tomato; I say potato.

Sex and gender are two completely different things.
Sex is a physical male/female identification.
Gender is a personal male/female identification set by society.

Most of the words that are censored are from the MSN messenger cursing filter. So, case in point, not all words can/are censored. Say your first example. MSN messenger probably didn't add that to the curse filter, nor did bungie.

That doesn't make sense.

Microsoft doesn't want us talking about that stuff. And its easy to agree with them, when you look at some of the maturity challenged (haha P.C. term) users on this site. Although, some of the blammed words are not always pejoratives, so I don't think we need every variation of the term hom0sex'ual blammed. Its a perfectly acceptable term for a person's orientation. I rarely use any of those words anyway, so it doesn't really affect me much.

Fight hard, break bones >{o

on a forum i use you enter what words you want censored manually.
you would type in the word, for example; banana
then you can type it in with *'s to make all forms of the word censored, for example;
*banana*
now any time "banana" is typed in it will be censored, whether it be ilikebanana or bananasaregood. so its possible that they just typed in so many different words they messed up on a few (which would explain why words are censored differently) or just didnt think of some.

Raped is allowed, because someone may want to say scraped. At least, I assume that's the reason.

Now, g@y and r@pe are censored for obvious reasons - people are going to use these words to insult others. Examples:

I am going to -blam!- you.

You are -blam!-.

And so on, and so forth.

I do agree with you on s3xual though. I can only see it being used to say, describe someone as a homos3xual, which isn't exactly a strong insult.

But how is g@y worse than s3xual? Bastard is as bad an insult as g@y, because people are actually ghey and can't help it. Hell, it's not even a bad thing. Raped makes sense, by the way....but what about "rapev"? That's not part of any word and the word "r@pe" still gets across.

QFT.

Also, I don't consider -blam!-, which usually ruins the victim's life, to be a "simple" crime.

I was thinking about that as I wrote it, but didn't care. I'll reword it:
R@pe is a crime/felony. It's debatable whether it is the worst, but then why isn't murder censored? Murder is a much worse felony and isn't censored. I don't see how people consider "r@pe" dirty. Well, I do, but it's really just a felony. A crime is a crime, and I don't see murder or arson being censored.
Just my opinion...

You wouldn't say the 'gender' of an insect. You would say the sex.

Also, I believe the reason you are looking fool piggyfool, is -Blam!-

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Because the word filter is a list of regular expressions, and some regular expressions are better able to grab various spellings of the words.

All of the words you've described don't need to be here. The "r" word earlier isn't censored because it is a crime, it is censored because childish morons use it in terms of beating someone at a game. I find that offensive. Similarly, the reference to one's orientation is removed for the same reason - not because their is anything bad about that group, but because of the use of the word.

And the word list is based on MSN (the web site's) word list, reduced to what I thought was appropriate for this community. That's why you find a word for a German fasicist in the filter - MSN put it there, and I decided that I didn't want our more childish users start using it as a taunt.

Remember - it is usually about what the word is used for on this board (hence, murder is not a censored word).

How come you can't say all those words in a group?

I actually prefer the "-blam!-" in place of the cuss word, adds class to the forum, instead of just having "[Censored]".

I was thinking, Why is the word that starts with a "M" and ends with "ation" -blamed!-? I really don't care but the word "Jackoff" is not -blamed!- I thought the word that starts with a "M" and ends with "ation" was much more mature. I have never heard of that word being used as an insult.

There are nigh-infinite ways of bypassing the -blam!- filter.

It's easier to individually blacklist those who bypass it, rather then to pool brainpower and attempt to think up every variation of an offensive word.
