The Joyeuse IP Formula

You need a modem or a router connected to a modem. The computer you have doesn't matter. If you want to connect your 360 to your comp, that's when you need windows.

My cousin, who is a computer genious recently tried to get Xbox 360 live. He claims he can't, however, because he has a Mac, and Macs don't work with Xbox live connection or whatever. (l'm not good with all these technical terms.) He told me that l too can't get live because l have an Apple Laptop. l told him that l have a Dell (Windows) Desktop as well tho. He said it still won't work because l have a Macintosh wireless router hooked up to it.

So my question is: is it true l can't get live because l have an Apple Laptop? My cousin usually knows his stuff and l don't doubt him, but l really want live and l don't want him to be right. So help me out here.

You don't have to run your connection through your computer, so it shouldn't matter what kind of computer you have. However, I think I have heard that some routers have problems with Live, so the Mac wireless router might be an issue. I don't really know, you might want to look into it.

If nothing else, you might be able to bypass the mac router to play XBL. If you hooked up another router (or splitter) before the wireless router, that might work. But I don't know your setup, so you would have to figure it out for yourself.

A modem is what you plug your phone or cable line into to turn the signal into an internet connection. If you use DSL, you would have a phone line coming from the wall into the modem, and then an ethernet cord going from the modem to a router, and then your would have cables from the router to your different computers, or Xbox.

You shouldn't have to pay anyone. You might want to get your cousin over to do it, or someone else you know. I would try to get the person who set up your network to do it, since they wouldn't have to figure out what kind of setup you have.

Okay so far you're being very helpful - thanks!

Now where can l get Live? Do l have to pay for it with a credit card? Or can l pay for it in a store? Once l get it, do l hook it up and l'm ready to go? Or is there a hole verification process and a bunch of other annoying bull -blam!- to do before l can finally play?

You can pay with a credit card, or buy a pack in the store (id go with the store option, you get a headset and other goodies)

Theres a verification process in that you need to enter in a adress and stuff, but its really nothing too long.

- oh, with your 360 you can sign up for a trial silver account, you can do this to make sure it works before you go out and spend your money.

Okay, so someone sum it all up for me. Starting from step one from actually buying Live, explain to me how l'd go about setting it up.

Fight hard, break bones >{o

your on the internet so you obviously have a modem. now if you dont have a router, take the cord from your computer and plug it into the back of your xbox or 360. now you must have DSL or faster internet service to get on Xbox Live. you will need an Ethernet cord as well (it is slightly bigger then a dial-up cord and will fit perfectly into your xbox).

on your xbox you go to the Dashboard (take your game out if its a xbox, if its a 360 you do the same then go all the way to the right). then you go to settings/internets settings, and you set everything to Automatic. if when you sign onto the internet you have to login then you will have to enter that info into the xbox (like for instance, Yahoo requires you to login; you would type your email then your password and have to enter you service name, for Yahoo its SBC)

to get Xbox Live you will need to either go to the store and buy a subscription card (it will say Xbox Live on it and should be obvious) or you can simply make an account (if you have a 360) and it will ask you if you want to connect to Xbox Live, then you follow the steps (not that difficult, just asking for your address and stuff), if you chose Gold, you will have to pay, if you choose Silver, its free but you cant play online multiplayer.

i wouldnt recomend it but you can always call, 1-800-4MY-XBOX
and if your lucky, they just might help.

So basically, l can hook up Live right now, if l'm willing to use my credit card and all l have to do is insert and plug in a few wires?

pretty much. to test if your xbox live works you dont need a credit card, but you will have to give some of your info...

its free to get online, just not free to play. and if you can hook a computer to the internet, its not much different to hook up your xbox.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Its pretty simple if you know where to start. First, unplug the the ethernet cable from your computer (this should be the cable you use for connecting to the internet). If you use a USB cable for your computer, then you'll have to go get an ethernet cable, because that's what Microsoft uses for xbox live connections. PM me if you have a USB cable, or ask for some clarification here.

When you get the ethernet cable out of your computer, plug it into the back of your xbox. The port is on the lower right side of this picture.
When you plug it in, turn on your 360 (make sure there is not a disk in it), and go the the option that says "make new xbox live account", or something to that effect. Input all your iinfo (address, name, desired gamer tag, credit card number) and you should be set.

So, all you need is a internet modem, and ethernet cable, and a credit card.

If you want to be able to use your computer and xbox live at the same time, you'll need a router. That splits the feed from the modem into different ports on the router. You plug the ethernet cable from the modem into the router. Then you use two more ethernet cables. You plug one into your computer, and one into your 360.

(if you understood his ^ ignore mine)

i think one comes with your 360, but i would recommend buying one anyway (well not to you since your already so lost)

do you know what your modem is? its usually a little black box thats connected to the wall somewhere, with a; Power Cord, DSL cable (small, usually grey), and an Ethernet Cable (bigger, different colors; black, blue, purple....)
it should also have flashing lights; Power, Ethernet, DSL, Internet, Activity

since your on the internet, its hooked up already. if you have an internet cord attached to your computer, FOLLOW IT! find the box its hooked up to and report back. if your connected wirelessly, ask your parents (or who ever set up your internet) where the Modem is or where your internet is connected from.

get that far and i'll help you with the rest.

Thanks, that helped.

l think l found the ethernet cable. But once l take it out, will l lose my online connection? Will l get kicked off AOL and not be able to talk to you anymore? And when l put it back in, will it be a pain in the ass to get my connection working again?
