To clear up a couple of technical issues.
900 rpm is wicked quick for an assault rifle, certainly one firing 30 cal ammo.
7.62x51 is 308 winchester, basically a shortened 30-06. It is used in the m14 rifle currently being fielded by some us spec-war troops. This gun uses a 20 rd mag, 32 rounds of 308 starts to get heavy.
The 1 in 7 twist made me blink, that's sufficient to stabilize a 30cal 300 gr lead slug, possibly 250 gr with a steel penetrator, or 330 gr using tungsten carbide. Any of these bullets at 2970 fps is far beyond what the 308 can currently achive, so we'll assume they have much better propellents 500 years from now.
That said, shooting any of these bullets out of a 8.5 lb rifle would be like getting hit with a baseball bat. Even accurate semiauto fire would next to impossible.
