Laughing At Nothing

<3 AR

But really,

I remember Halo CE was all about the Pistol, and the sniper.

I loved the original AR...

But if you wanted to kill something you practically had to be invited over for dinner to get a deadly, long sustained burst in.

So I can tell I'm gonna love this. It definitely would be a nice counter to the BR.
I can't wait to see what it can do to a sniper, and maybe its a better choice than the shotgun D:

But then again, we don't know how this will play out till we actually play the game, and so I'm sure I do play the game, now would be a good time to reserve my copy...

Great news. Now we have the answer to the question of "will the AR or BR be chosen for inclusion in Halo 3?" - and it's the best news of all because they both will be in it! Great job Bungie! Now for the Halo 1 Pistol - can we have it back too? Revamped, even? ;)

I just hope the MA5C Assault Rifle sounds cool [and by sounds cool, of course I mean the sound it makes while firing it]. The AR from Halo: CE sounded awesome. Now if Bungie can make the MA5C Assault Rifle sound even more intense and loud than it's predecessor, that would be something. ;)

It is called a magazine not a clip! You say that it uses a magazine in the begining, then you call it a clip.

The lack of military knowledge is really starting to worry me about Halo3.

Edit: will we be seeing the MA5K as well...?

u fail

One of the main things I was looking forward to in Halo 3 was the reduction of the damage that melees did, alas it seems that isn't going to be the case. I remember the good old days of close quarter combat that didn't end in smashing the B button as fast as you could. I suppose not everyone has the hand-eye coordination it takes to shoot AND circle at the same time so I shouldn't complain. Also I'm 23 and my reflexes have fully developed, it's unfair to expect ten year olds, whom I suspect has become Bungie's targeted age group, to have the same level of digital dexterity as me. I suppose I'll just have to find another way to spend the fifty bucks, maybe a couple lap dances will calm me...

Alright you can call me a jacka55 for getting nit picky about the weapon stats on the MA5C, but I mean since you put stats about it out there, you could have done your homework a little.

First of all you say that its a 1 in 7 twist and that it has longer range and that its effective range is 300 meters. Secondly you add on it uses a 7.62 x 51 FMJ and only has an effective range of 300 meters !!!
.. I mean comeone who put this stuff together.. I mean really. This sounds like someone went fishing for weapon characteristics and used glue stick to make it a complete description. Let me explain...

You can verify this information in 'Janes Gun Recognition' but most of it is past experience as I was in the marine corp as a machine gunner that used a 7.62 x 51 FMJ rounds. And our effective range was 800-1000 meters via iron sights on the FN MAG(M240G). Now a AK-47 uses a 7.62 x 39 round and its effective range is about 400 meters. The M1 Grand uses a 7.62 x 51 FMJ round and has an effective range of about 800-1000 meters.

In all cases that I mentioned the rifle twist was 1 in 4. The only reason why there would be a 1 in 7 twist is if the round was unstable in flight like the 5.56 round. If you had that round come out of a barrel with 1 in 4 twist a blade of grass could deflect the round as it was experienced with the early M16 rifles. Also a 1 in 4 twist produced a horrible effect once it entered a target. It more or less created a wound pattern of a 12 gauge shotgun internally. A 1 in 7 twist was used to stabilize the round so it could hit its target and make it there. It should also be noted that the 5.56 round can be fired out of a 1 in 12 twist barrel in a situation where extreme accuracy is needed. It also brings down the range of the round, unfortunately.

So to simple correct your MA5C Assault Rifle Stats you should have it be
1 in 4 twist, and an effective range of 800 meters if you are using the 7.62 x 51 FMJ. Otherwise leave it at 1 in 4 twist with 400 meters or 300 while using a 7.62 x 39 FMJ.

Here is a comparison of the MA5B and MA5C

Ammo Capacity:
MA5B: 60 rounds per clip, 600 maximum capacity
MA5C: 32 rounds per clip, maximum capacity unknown
Rate of Fire:
MA5B: 900 rounds per minute (15 rounds per second)
MA5C: 750-900 rounds per minute (12.5 to 15 rounds per second)

Apparently, automatic fire of the MA5C will exhaust the clip in something like 2.5 to 3 seconds. Likely bungie is doing this to discourage spraying and praying, as that reload time could be very painful.

The rate of fire is actually quite realistic to what would be the rate of fire with any 7.62 x51 FMJ machine gun/assualt rifle. The variable in weapons usually stems from the gas that is used to cycle the weapon, and it typically can change based upon what climate that you are in. Especially since its the gas that is propelling the weapons automatic rate of fire.

ok i admit having more power and accuracy will be a welcome change but, i would still like to have the old AR, one of the more memorable moments of halo CE was walking into a room and spraying everything in sight but with this new AR with a lower ammo capacity your gonna be reloading every 5 -blam!- seconds, and even with short automatic bursts you will still empty that magazine hella fast if i was gonna lower the ammo capacity i would at least put it at 40-45 rounds but that is just my opinion.

Actually, using Greenhill's formula for twist rate, 1:7" is a fairly accurate number.

D = bullet diameter in inches
L = bullet length in inches

(150 X D X D)/L

(150 X .308 X .308)/2.00787 = 7.087 twist

All this aside, I'm sure the Bungie engineers did a lot of testing on what the best spin rate would be for their rifle :)

Actually in the military I heard "Mike Mike" quite a bit. Mostly infantry guys.

A mil is actually 1 thousandth of an inch where a millimeter is 1 thousandth of a meter.

Or also a POG. ;P

POG (Person other than a Grunt): A term often used by Marine Infantry (Grunts) to refer to anyone who is not them. Specifically anyone in an Admin Field.

ok i have a question for all of you. Based on all of the information in this thread if you could only choose one weapon to use to fight off overwelming enemy forces would you pick the BR the new AR or the old AR?

me personally i would pick the old AR because of its large magazine capacity and decent power.

If this is supposed to be hapening a few centuries in the future relative to the current time, then why are the marines and MC armed with weapons from the last century?
It seems that the only really advanced weapon the humans in the Haloverse have fielded is the guass cannon.
I mean they have artificial gravity. Why not put some of that physics to work in a weapon system?
because it wont be as freakin cool as it is now!!

It could actually be so freakin cooler that it is now.
