Both Halo 1 and Halo 2 were amazing games and people who like both (or one more than the other) all have legitimate reasons to. In the end though, there is no real point in discussing it, because all discussions will end up in a "I like this, so its better" kind of argument with no evidence as to why. It is simply opinion, and you can not argue opinion as people tend to be quite stubborn on that point.
That said, both games had their strengths and weaknesses.
I personally liked Halo 1 more, as it was more fast-paced, and had, in my opinion, a better graphical style (not better graphics, yes Halo 2 had higher-res textures, normal maps, etc., but Halo 1's graphics are more visually appealing, at least to me). I just like the feel of being in a wide open battlefield with 2 banshees attacking me, while having to deal with wraith tanks, throwing a sticky at some grunts, pistoling an incoming elite, tearing into the remaining grunts with my AR, meleeing the jackals, taking out 2 elites, making a run through hordes of flood to reach a banshee, flying away, then launching coordinated strikes with the fuel rod gun on the banshee until the enemies were all dead. I have never been able to do something like that in Halo 2, and its that kind of fun that I miss, which is present in Halo 1.
Some things I did not like in Halo 2 were the grenade physics, the dual-wielding (if you can use 2 of each weapon, that weapon has to be nerfed so it is not as powerful when you are using 2, therefore making every dual-wielded weapon almost require 2 to be useful, so here is my question: Why not just make a single weapon more powerful?), the constant Arbiter/MC switching (took me out of the story), the lack of ammo in Single-Player (at least I always ran out), and the repetitiveness of the levels (yes, halo 1 had this also, and I disliked it then). In my opinion, Halo 2 was rushed. I did enjoy its multiplayer more than that of Halo 1, however. The auto-aim made it easy, and so did the combos, but playing it is an enjoyable experience.
I also (unlike a lot of people) loved the ending in Halo 2. It made me excited for Halo 3. I wouldn't like to know what happened after the MC arrived at earth without being able to Finish the Fight (ie. Halo 3), so, while it was frustrating, Halo 3 will be more exciting and complete because of it.
There it is, my overanalysis of both games. I know that none of you care what I wrote, and it probably makes no sense, but I had nothing better to do
