The Classifieds was a very generous concept, but it seems to be failing at its true intent. Advertisements are usually directed to the classifieds, which helps keep the forums clean, but once there, nobody sees the advertisements.

Before today, the only time I ever went into the classifieds was to post an advertisement for a group I had started. I suspect this to be true of many other members as well. Today I went there to look at some ads. I found a couple of groups that I didn't want to join, some clans I didn't want to join, and some external Halo forums I didn't want to join. That is a perfectly acceptable conclusion.

However, there are some problems. The obvious problem is that more people go to the classifieds to advertise than to read advertisements. Don't call me on fictitious information :) . However, on an aesthetic note, there were still problems.

The forum's set-up, while well conceived for discussion, doesn't seem to work so well for advertisements. The advertisements are all over the place, and once they sink below the first page, they're effectively lost forever. The more worthy, well-written advertisements sink below things like this:

bump please someone join.
***BUMP***

For the most part, the advertisements tell me nearly nothing about the group (or clan). All I have is the poster's word that "we're active". Testimonials would be nice, if not for the bumping.

It would also be nice if advertisements had updates. Some groups really grow from the lame advertisement they place in the classifieds, but you'd never know that from the ad. I would love updating advertisements (if I visited the Classifieds more often), but that would be either bumping or completely ignored (since edits don't bump posts).

I don't have any comprehensive ideas for a better system, but a rotating advertisement would be nice (with proper precautions to avoid advertising dead groups), along with updates and testimonials of some sort. Thoughts?

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Perhaps maybe a "Classified Ad of the day" section on the front page...

I'm sure Achronos is more than capable of facilitating such a program..

What do ya say, eh, Mr. Achronos?!

The Frozen Minority - The most infamous clan borne from the Seventh Column.

I think a community spotlight miniature would be better. While I don't know how we could do this maybe have a few volunteers take submissions and review the advertised groups/clans and have proper write ups in exchange for custom titles or avatars or something.

The reviews could then be placed on the mainpage as community news.

While it would be hard organising, maintaining and rewarding those involved, it is just a concept. Feel free to come up with something better.

I like the concept. You get more of the community, but new groups or *cough* small groups might get the short end of that stick. Every group has to start somewhere...

You want to know what it'd be like to have no moderators on this site? Try this easy to prepare simulation.
Step 1: Procure yourself an intact box, something a fridge or similarly large appliance.
Step 2: Fill cardboard box halfway with feral cats. One or two should be rabid.
Step 3: Climb inside the box, closing the top behind you.
Step 4: Begin screaming and thrashing wildly at the cats.

I don't think the problem lies with the system. I think there is a genuine lack of interest. And with the No-Reply rule the forum looks like a complete ghost town so no one ever goes there.

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

You could try to get something into the Bathroom Reader, and maybe people would get a better feel for your group/clan from that. Just a thought.

msoell used to do a weekly seventh column chapter review (i even did it for a couple months or so heh)...I don't know why KP doesn't do something similar. I guess he's just too busy playing halo 3 all the time.

I'll volunteer, and it's not just for the custom avatar/title!

Haven't you been a moderator long enough to know that to get someone to do work you have to force them with hippos and wet noodles?

and I think the main reason the classifieds has no activity is thta no one cares to join a gorup or a clan unless they find a real reason to join, not just an ad.

I'd be up for that, as would many others I'd imagine.

I think this is a sweet idea. It would help a lot of groups get a little more recognition.

Note: Does this explain why the second podcast has been so long coming?
