My Story,
I'm not a huge gamer, but I did like playing the Blizzard titles on pc.
I bought a PS2 solely for MotoGP b/c I'm a sportbike guy. What happened in the end? I only used it for watching DVDs. Nothing else in PS2's vaunted library appealed to me in any way. Tried Batman, that sucked. Turns out I don't like playing alone.
So then I heard about Xbox, maybe a year after Live was first released. I decided to sell the PS2 for the Xbox b/c of Live, and the ONLINE motogp. Turns out I like FPS the most and play CS. Now I play almost everyday. Online multiplayer is the only reason I console game.
I never tried Halo except once at a Lan party. Yes, it was great fun like any multiplayer FPS. But i found it ridiculously off-center. Too powerful pistol, weak rifle that took the full clip to kill anyone. I used the pistol as my primary weapon, and the rifle as the backup weapon. I didn't like the 'shield effect' when it was hit. Too busy. I also don't like not being able to buy guns, it's a good system to buy guns!
You know, in a multiplayer frenzy you don't really have time to stop and smell the roses.
WELL!
The other day I was at EB, and saw a teenage couple playing HALO on the demo stand. They were getting into a jeep type car (warthog i suppose) and I thought, Man, that Halo 2 looks awesome. The graphics really put the CS port-2-xbox to shame. Then the clerk told me it was Halo1. I just thought maybe they had a demo.
So, where am I at, I'm buying into the Halo hype and am confident it'll be great fun. Especially hearing how much work went into balancing the weapons. What turned me off Halo prior to Halo2? The incessant 'cheerleading' by the 'Official Xbox Magazine' about Halo. They put so many unwarranted comparisons and mentions to Halo that it was down right irritating. I no longer buy that crappy magazine. Any mag that can't hold a standard of objectivity is useless. (pass that onto them for me Bungie please).
Seriously, there are anywhere between 15-30 references to Halo in any issue, in places that have nothing to do with Halo.
I know how much Xbox has invested in Halo and vice versa. I know there is a directive (unspoken or not) to the OXBM to support Halo, and it nearly kept me away from buying Halo2. I felt like they were trying to force Halo down my throat which netted the exact opposite reaction intended. I hated Halo just b/c of that type of press, sight unseen.
But, I've read up Halo myself now, and I like everything Halo and Bungie has to offer. I'll definately do the single player campaign, and look into playing Halo1 later on. But to catch up on backstory I've read the plot synopsis of the novel and Halo1.
