CMT Mod team leader

Not an issue realy. Can't be worse than what we have in Hpc. And it will work eventualy, so I'm not concerned.

Not that big of a performance hit... at least, for ATI cards...

coming from doing the majority of my gaming at 800x600, those benchmarks look totally fine.

the only stuff that looks really unnacceptable, imho, are the FPS at less than 30...and it seems those results are mostly generated when the resolution is cranked up to something stupid like 2560x1600 with 4x AA. i mean seriously... do you honestly expect to play at that resolution anyway?

in any case i'm sure both ati and nvidia will be working hard to optimize their drivers with vista. i think which ever company can do it first may even see more sales/income (initially) so that is good incentive for them to get on that.

Heyyo,

I haven't noticed any problems with the RTM and game performance..

Indeed. People are freaking out over Dx9 games running slower in WinV than WinXP. The difference isn't really noticeable, and is due to drivers really. I just ran more tests just to prove the small gap in preformance. I am running FEAR with my current rig (specs in sig) and the settings are on HIGH, which is plenty playable on my system and I get good framerates. The screen rez is 1024x768, and 4xAF and no AA. For FEAR it's v1.08, and running without any mods or modded exe's or the likes. Just vanilla. I did close my xfire and disabled some logitech HID drivers which cause preformance issues.

FEAR Benchmark Results on WinV 64bit:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/the_mard/FEARBenchmark GraphicsonHighWinV64bi.jpg

__FPS__
Minimum: 27
Average: 68
Maximum: 162

__FPS Distribution__
0% Below 25 FPS
17% Between 25 and 40 FPS
83% Above 40% FPS

now, FEAR Benchmark results on WinXP 32bit:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/the_mard/FEARBenchmark GraphicsonHighWinXP32b.jpg

__FPS__
Minimum: 35
Average: 77
Maximum: 163

__FPS Distribution__
0% Below 25 FPS
10% Between 25 and 40 FPS
90% Above 40% FPS

So yeah, the loss is minimal. I've also already posted in other threads that the framerate loss in Halo1PC is also very minimal. You guys need to worry a lot less on this matter... WinV was more meant to run Dx10 games anywho, which will haul ass. I'm sure if you ran benchmarks in even Microsoft flight sim (first Dx10 compatible game out) would show that it hauls ass compared to Dx9 version. Of course, us the public can't test this ourselves yet to prove it cause nVidia still hasn't released public drivers for their G80 series vidcards for WinV.. messed eh? a matter of days away from public release, and no Dx10 drivers still. =P

Anywho, further proves my point, WinV ain't really the problem, it's the hardware support behind it that's hindered, just like WinXP when it first came out, cause games ran better in Win98SE than they did in WinXP. Do you still see the majority of folk preferring Win98SE over WinXP? heh, hells no. Exactly. In time guys, I'm sure we'll all be moving away from WinXP. For now though, we must frown upon the lack of awesome support for WinV from hardware vendors... like mainly Creative. I'm sure that's the main reason why my framerates were lower... why? Creative is apparently NOT going to support Direct Audio in WinV... only OpenAL, so that screws over every game that uses Direct Audio hardware acceleration for things like EAX, etc. So FEAR? it was running my audio in software mode. Yep, lame for all current games, I know.. hopefully the game developping companies realise this and add support for OpenAL for their games... I must admit though, the idea of open source audio layer, thus supporting the idea of an open source developpent stage (more effective if done right) than legacy drivers and abilities is nice....

You and me both, bro.

The way I figure, though, is if I get a Vista-running computer in about a year after Vista's release, all the kinks will have been worked out for drivers, and Vista will have found itself some fixes or even a service pack. So I'll just sit back and be patient...

Heh, sry guys, I just wanted to clarify things... guess it was a lot of info at once. =P

The thing I find hallarious, is how close my score was compared to the "killer rig" that Tom's Hardware used. I was what? 20F/S or so off and on their first benchmarks they didn't use AA or AF when I used 4xAF? It brings a smile to my face. :)

But yes, exactly Oni Ryu. In time the bugs will be worked out for driver, and everyone will then praise Vista, and then in a year or 2 Vista will take over as main OS used throughout the world. Just a matter of time. But I myself am still damn impressed at how well my games run innit even with not the greatest drivers out there (mainly aimed at Creative...) and a fully 3D Windows GUI. =D

The few, the proud, the leet.

Odd, looks like the drivers still aren't final...... I mean, come on, Vista doesn't decrease the preformance, the drivers do......

come on, at least do your research before screaming articles.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

This is hardly surprising.

In terms of modern, DX9.0 gaming performance:

Win2K>WinXP>Vista

Also Tom's Hardware Guide is junk. Anyone remember their AMD vs. Intel Stress Test fiasco?

When I was running the beta a while back, I also felt a performance hit. But they'll fix the drivers

For some reason, when you run a game full screen with Aero still enabled, Vista slows down, even though none of the Aero effects are being used. However, if you switch the colour scheme to Vista Basic then it runs happily. I found the same for videos, although videos run in a window with Aero enabled seem to run fine.

Exactly. Win2k (small k dude. k = 1000 K = 1024) runs the fastest cause it doesn't load as much crap. But for the amount of stuff WinV has running I say it runs damn well, and yes, the only thing holding back WinV is really drivers... definately sound drivers that only do software emulation gives a big framerate hit... check this:

FEAR Benchmark Graphics on High WinV 64bit No Sound
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/the_mard/FEARBenchmark GraphicsonHighWinV6-1.jpg

__FPS__
Minimum: 33
Average: 76
Maxiumum: 164

__FPS Distribution__
0% Below 25 FPS
10% Between 25 and 40 FPS
90% Above 40 FPS

So that's pretty much the same figures as WinXP Home 32bit. Toms Hardware probably used Intel HD audio drivers, which I'm not sure whether they have hardware acceleration or not.

As for Halo only running 20 F/S? that's odd. Last benchmark I ran I got this:

So I got high frames, and that's not far off from WinXP Home 32bit which I got this..

One again, probably due to crappy drivers mainly from Creative (geez, support DirectAudio, just discontinue developping EAX for it so EAX 6.0 or whatever is only OpenAL then...)

What it is.

i run Vista RC1 and i play halo and i get about the same performance as i do with XP...as of right now Nvidia needs to release some good drivers because on that little article, ATI has pretty much nailed their drivers down good but Nvidia's are about 7-10% off of what they should be as in performance....

I'm certifiable.

I could easily see the difference in performance between HaloPC on XP vs. Vista being a driver issue. Lots of hardware manufacturers seem to be a bit behind on getting drivers out for Vista; I've got an Origami (drawn by Halo in the ad, but stayed for the form factor) and Samsung still hasn't gotten HID drivers for my touchscreen yet.

-- Steve'll probably hold off on getting Vista for a bit anyway. Gotta pay off the Office 2007, and the XBox360, and maybe stuff more RAM in the desktop first.

Crysis @ CES 2007 ran on Vista Beta drivers, also using Beta drivers on the Geforce 8800 GTX to run on Vista, and the developers said that it ran on Vista better then on XP DX9. It was also running on DX10 mode.
