Why are they making the Halo 2 PC version only for Vista? It just seems pointless as the majority of PC users now all have XP. I'm fairly confident my PC could run Halo 2. I'm sure any PC, even low to mid end gaming rig's could play it.

Upgrading to Vista for Halo 2 doesn't seem worth it to me, as Vista is virtually Windows XP with some flashy features. Nothing to die for.

Will they release a 2000/ME/XP version? This is really bugging me as I love Halo 2, but hate Vista. Just hearing the name ticks me off.

Vista isn't just a beter-looking version of XP. It is a hole new operating system with new and beter software and tons of new features. Yes maybe your rig can work a direct port of halo 2 from xbox to PC, but H2V is going to have way beter graphics and features that can't be suported on XP, such as Live Anywhere. It is defenitly beter to have an awsome game on Vista then to have a good game on XP.

Argh, I hate all the marketing guff that gets thrown around!

First it's, "Oh because Vista is getting DirectX 10", then we find out that it uses 9. Although they could have just put 10 on XP.

The graphics of Halo 2 are subpar compared to recent XP titles, so there's no excuse for "games on XP can't look good!", so enough of that excuse because it's not true in the slightest. All graphical functions used in Halo 2 are looking set to use what XP already has to offer

As for Live Anywhere, there's no reason why it can't be patched into Windows XP or made as a seperate service. IE7, anyone?

Not only that, but it sounds like the only thing used by this 'Live Anywhere' is that it enables matchmaking, and that's...erm....that's it? Nothing interesting like global stats? Ranks? Clans? Leagues? Apparently not.

Think of this, matchmaking on PC is going to be like going into a game of Halo now and picking a non-dedicated server and pitting yourself against a host. Not very fun usually.

Halo 2 is on Vista to try and boost sales, like Halo did for the Xbox, and like Halo 2 did for Xbox Live, and how Halo 3 is going to for the 360 as well as a counter to the Playstation 3 (although they've left it way too late for that, but the PS3 seems to be flopping nicely without help).

That's my opinion anyway.

Exactly! XP is definantly up to the job, but marketing is all Microsoft can think about. I personally think they would make more sales if they released it for XP and Vista. It wouldn't be that hard for them to do.

But like a previous poster said, I'm sure someone will hack it.

They're making Halo 2 for Vista because XP will soon be gone. Embrace the future.

Someone might be able to hack Halo 2 to work on XP. If they feel like spending a year or two re-porting a game for a soon to be defunct operating system for no personal gain. Then there's the fact that in two years Vista will be the standard, and few people will still be running XP.

So really, it would make about as much sense as porting Custom Edition to the Mac.

But go ahead and whine, it's not like your piss-poor arguements are going to do you any good. Me, I'm just happy Halo 2 is coming out for PC at all. Bungie could look at threads like these and think: "These ungrateful little shats, to hell with Halo 2 Vista, let's focus on Halo 3."

Live Anywhere, and just for the sake of progress.

Wrong. Windows Vista is superior in so many ways, I don't know where to begin. To dismiss it as Windows XP with lip-gloss and a push-up bra is the last thing you should do.

All I'm going to say is this: A half-baked, 3 year old Xbox port with few extras and minor add-ons is not gonig to sell an Operating System upgrade. You people have it backwards. Vista is going to sell copies of Halo. Those hardcore Halo fans who might consider shelling out the money for Vista just to get to H2V already have H2 on their Xboxes.

I'm honestly more excited about finally seeing a new OS than I am at playing H2 (since I've gone over quite a bit of it extensively with friends on Xbox).

I thought I might get suspended if I was that blunt, but okay. ;)

I'd hardly call XP defunct, and it won't be defunt for a LONG time to come. Not only that, but as said earlier, it could have easily been made compatible for both.

Actually, I don't see how it would be at all hard.

Make it for XP, it works on Vista! Ta-da, like magic.

For no gain? There's a lot of gain, and no loss.

You package it up as one game.

Vista and XP have completely different kernels. So Bungie would have to create a seperate game for each. Not only is that a waste of time and money, but it will mean that the XP version would only sell for maybe a year before Vista becomes standard. And that's why Bungie is developing Halo 2 for Vista, because it will be the standard OS on new computers.

I don't know about that. Sure gamers and enthusiastic computer dudes might not be so... reluctant to purchase a OS upgrade, but what's in it for an average Joe?

The "Average Joe" is probably going to buy a computer sometime within the next few years. Since even an Average Joe can afford to buy a midrange PC with Vista installed. Just like XP became standard on all new PC's, so will Vista.

Considering I can take many a XP game and install it on Vista and it works, there's no need for Vista to be different.

so
you'r saying i'm wrong?

Halo 2 is to Vista is just like Halo 1 is to the Xbox (yes, the Xbox was good, don't flame me.)
but Halo came out exclusevly on Xbox, which made a lot of people buy the xbox, thus making microsoft more money.
Windows XP can be viewed as the PS 2 here - the ONLY reason why Halo was never ported to the PS 2 is cuz Microsoft said so.

P.S. don't call me an idiot

I'm saying you are wrong. I have seen a lot of similar comments over the past year, and many of them were posted by idiots. I can see you are not one of those said idiots, and I apologize for the unintended insult.

However, you are incorrect in stating that making Halo 2 Vista exclusive will sell copies of Vista. It's the other way around. When someone buys a new OS they think: "Hey, I should buy a game to go with it" so they buy Halo 2 Vista. The OS will sell itself, and doesn't need a video game to do that.

Also, when Halo came out for Xbox, people didn't buy an Xbox to play it. They bought the game to play on the Xbox.
