Subject: Why Vista?

Blarg.

but there are a lot of people out there who WOULD buy Vista JUST to play H2V

ok
look
with halo 2 + vista and halo 1 + xbox, people don't buy OS JUST to play the game. BUT, they are like "hm.....should i get Vista or not? I mean, is it worth it?...oh hey, there's halo 2 on it. yeah i guess i would buy it." So H2V doesnt make them buy it, in just enhances their want to buy vista . Like, if they think vista's good, but dont REALLY care what operating system they have, knowing that h2 is there it kills their doubts. So they dont buy vista to play h2, they buy it
because its a great OS PLUS it has h2
see what i mean?
but come on, it would sell less copies if they didnt have h2 on it.
i mean, i saw hundreds of polls on these forums saying "would you buy Vista just to play halo 2 ", and many replied yes.

oh whatever, we're arguing over a pretty stupid thing.

Why are they making the Halo 2 PC version only for Vista? It just seems pointless as the majority of PC users now all have XP. I'm fairly confident my PC could run Halo 2. I'm sure any PC, even low to mid end gaming rig's could play it.

Upgrading to Vista for Halo 2 doesn't seem worth it to me, as Vista is virtually Windows XP with some flashy features. Nothing to die for.

Will they release a 2000/ME/XP version? This is really bugging me as I love Halo 2, but hate Vista. Just hearing the name ticks me off.

No, Windows vista was made to give gfx a better look, or that is what I'm tolded by people who play Halo CE, and XP I think can fun some of the betas, not very well, but they can run it. and why do you think Bungie, and every one else is calling it Halo 2 Vista, it is better sounding then halo 2 XP, or Halo 2 ME, Windows Vista is the next best OS, live with it, most times when some one makes a Gamer, or some new Software, they're going to try to get it on the newest OS, wich at that time, is Windows Vista, now when they started working H2V, then ya, XP was the best, but it wasn't going to be released when XP was still the #1 OS out there, Windows Vista is coming out 01-30-07, the price may be high, but so what, you can wait for the price to go down, as more and more people want it.
Posted by: cheesemaster
Vista isn't just a beter-looking version of XP. It is a hole new operating system with new and beter software and tons of new features. Yes maybe your rig can work a direct port of halo 2 from xbox to PC, but H2V is going to have way beter graphics and features that can't be suported on XP, such as Live Anywhere. It is defenitly beter to have an awsome game on Vista then to have a good game on XP.

Agreed.
Oh, and DoomyCheese, Bungie has told every one why, and it is too late to make one for any other OS, they've been making it for Windows Vista, nothing else, but the next Vista, and any new OS to come out in the next 50 years.

You tell other people do research and yet you reel off a load of untrue guff yourself?

1) I already went through the whole what is and isn't marketing spin which involved the graphics that you say XP can't handle.

2) Despite what you think, many gamers do NOT go for the latest OS. When XP was released, many chose to remain on Windows 2000 or even 98.

3) You're saying one reason they made it for the Vista is because Halo 2 Vista sounds better than Halo 2 XP? Dot dot dot. Besides, really, it's Halo 2 PC! ;)

4) Do you have any idea how hard the performance hit on current hardware is when gaming with Vista? Sure, "newer hardware" etc etc, but even then that newer hardware would have been better yet on XP.

I haven't read anything concerning this, but is it possible that Halo 2V can run on DX9, but will be able to make use of DX10?

If this is the case, then it is obvious why they released it for Vista, if it can use DX10, why bother putting in the effort to make it for XP and Vista when it will look best on Vista anyway? It's the same argument for Halo 3 on XBox 360, DX10 will make H2V so much better. If it's not the case of H2V being able to take advantage of DX10, then yea, I don't really see the advantage to the end user in playing it on Vista as apposed to XP, I know the many advangates to running a game on Vista, but are any of them really significant enough to warrant making Halo 2 for Vista exlusively? Most relate to game stability and efficiency, which will give a performance boost, but big deal, mid range comps these days can handle most games at least decently, and as has been stated, H2V doesn't look (so far) to be that much better than other games we see today that run just fine on XP.

Vista is a performance hit, not a boost.

Also, for the tenth time, Halo 2 does NOT use DX10 features. Another thing, there's no real reason why DX10 had to be on Vista. They said IE7 was going to be a Vista only feature, but look, they changed their minds.

How can you say Vista is a performance hit to a game you have not played yet?

To me, all graphics cards newer than my old GeForce 4 Ti 4200 is a performance hit while playing Halo PC. So obviously they suck.

Yeesh...it's because my new card (and it's use of newer drivers) are not compatible with the other old hardware etc. on my comp.

Another thing, there's no real reason why DX10 had to be on Vista. They said IE7 was going to be a Vista only feature, but look, they changed their minds.

DX10 interacts with the Kernel differently than DX9, fundamentally DX10 can not work with XP as a result.

According to Bungie the ONLY REASON H2 is on Vista is to take advantage of multiplayer options not possible with XP.

BS or not? Who knows? We don't know the fundamental differences between the way Vista networks and the way XP networks, anyone ever thought that maybe it's not a simple patch that would make it work on XP? Remember the reason Bungie hasn't fixed Superbouncing on XBox?

XP's networking code simly may not be able to be patched to work with what Bungie envisions for H2V multiplayer.

Until I see a professional come out and say "Hey! All they needed was to re-write [code section] and it could work on XP!" Then I'm going to assume there is a reason it can't be done.

And as Multiplayer is key for any game other than Oblivion, obviously H2V must be on Vista, otherwise it will get it's multiplayer ass kicked by the other current games.

There are benchmarks all over the Internet to read, and you wrongly assume I've never used Vista for myself.

Sure it's going to be slightly different, but that goes without saying but that isn't to say they couldn't have managed it on XP. Patches do frequently involve updating the kernel of an OS.

What's this about "networking code"? There are standard networking protocols used in every OS and Vista isn't suddenly going to rewrite all that. God forbid, the Internet would cease to function. That is NOT a reason for Halo 2 being Vista.

The point of the matter is, complaining about Halo 2 being Vista Exclusive is like complaining that the New York skyline blocks your view of the Statue of Liberty.

Utterly pointless. Halo 2 is coming out for Vista, and Vista only. And no amount of whining, complaining, griping or moaning about it is going to change that fact. So either accept it, or put a cork in it.

Right, except you're ignoring the 300 dollar price tag of Vista.

Picking up where you left off, Average Consumer Joe would say, "Geez...300 dollars for ultimate? Oh, wait...there's an Xbox 360 that's sitting on the shelf right next to those Vista boxes. And wait...it's a lot cheaper than getting Vista. Why don't I just buy an Xbox? And Vista is just an Upgrade? What's that? I don't see any real benefits, it's just a computer, after all."

Then, you have the Halo Fanatic..."Hm...I bought the Xbox and I already have both H1, H2, and soon I'll get H3...why should I bother with Vista? I could buy a year's supply of games with 300 dollars. Or a ton of Bungie Gear or even put it into my Mjolnir Mark V Nightmare Armor fund."

Again, a game won't sell an Operating System. Especially not a 3-year-old Xbox port with only cosmetic changes and minor additions.

Someone will hack it, just you wait....
well halo 2 has been hacked already..............i garantee it. I know how they did it too. Download xbox emulator off the internet. With expensive software(that they probably stole or stole the license to use it)they ripped the .iso, batch files, etc and copied them to their pc. Opened the emulator, opened the ripped files from the emulator, set the key bindings, and viola halo 2 on your pc. @chat->Mods please dont ban me, i never did it myself, i just know this stuff.

Fail. Those emulators are so bad, you're lucky if you can get the original Halo to get to the main menu. Last time I checked, the only games they even supported was the first game and Turok Evolution.

Live Anywhere.

Please. Do you honestly believe that Live Anywhere is only possible on Vista? BS. Microsoft wants to make some extra money by making Halo 2 Vista exclusive.

Hey, he didn't ask if there were any technical reasons, he asked why the studio made the decision and I gave it.

The main problems with vista is going to be driver support for a few months after its release, unlike in xp you need a completely different drive for each slightly different hardware piece. Such as special monitor drivers and companies having to completely rewrite their xp drivers. I can't wait until 2GB of memory is standard and 4GB is considered alot, instead of the "wow" now a days. Sort of like how 256 MB of memory was standard before xp, I'm just going to wait for all/most things to be fixed, in 2-3 years. Like service pack 2 for xp. I was using a computer with windows 2000 until this summer.
