Well that would mean pretty much most of bungie.net's active members will be banned. I can see a perma ban for first time big rule breaking like spam, but there are already placeholders to stop that. Minor rule breaking isnt too bad. The whole point of a week long ban is so you wont do it again.

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

I think this is too harsh. Everyone needs a few warnings to get back onto track.

I think because you were caught once for stealing you should get life in prison with no parole. Now is that fair?

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

Trust me. Acting as Gestapo is not the answer. All it would do is hurt the community. Nobody would be able to really enjoy themselves for fear of stepping out of line. How would you like being banned for posting in the wrong forum by accident? Not very fun now is it.

Great ideas and fun discussion cannot come out of a community that has to walk on eggshells.

2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Some people just make the most terrible suggestions... :\

Almost every good poster has been banned atleast once, some interesting ones have been banned like 8 or 9 times. Heck a moderator was banned at one point(jokingly, but hey it counts). Just because they screw up once doesn't mean they are forever horrible.

  • 01.24.2007 8:23 PM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

No, that's not a good idea. If we could stop someone who is permabanned from ever coming back, though, that would be excellent.

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Such a final punishment means that infractions must be severe. Now you can't just hand out a one week ban for someone who was insulting people. Mods have to keep handing out warnings and hope that people pay attention, and a warning isn't going to teach someone much. But maybe people will learn their lesson the first time and come back with an alternate account as a better person.

Might I ask how alternate accounts will be prevented? If you ban IPs, then you have people with changing IP addresses that will simply get past the ban. Then people who get stuck with an IP address that has been tagged, they get banned automatically.

There's no need to ostracize people for a big crime when you can give them time-outs for smaller crimes. Then if people keep committing said small crimes, you can remove them, albeit for a short time anyway.

You want to know what it'd be like to have no moderators on this site? Try this easy to prepare simulation.
Step 1: Procure yourself an intact box, something a fridge or similarly large appliance.
Step 2: Fill cardboard box halfway with feral cats. One or two should be rabid.
Step 3: Climb inside the box, closing the top behind you.
Step 4: Begin screaming and thrashing wildly at the cats.

Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I got a one week ban from Ghandi 2 once, and not being able to come back just for that one infraction would be unfair.

I agree that it sucks that spammers return on alt accounts to try and destroy the forums, but that is why we have moderators. With their ninja quickness they stop even the worst of spam before it gets too out of hand.

There is a way. It requires tracing IP addresses and sending ninjas...

Bans being permanent is stupid. This isn't a dictatorship where if a rule is broken, your gone for good. People make mistakes, don't know the rules, and there's at least another 50 legitimate reasons for why someone would get banned for a short period of time. Banning someone permanently for a minor infraction is like jailing someone who stole an empty carton of milk for life.

QFT. The idea of banning IPs, however, makes me tickle inside.

As it has been said many, many times; the more it costs to post on Bungie.net, the less you'll see of me.

No way. There need to be calibrations, there needs to be a range for offenses. Otherwise, there's no determining why something happened, it's just a one-size-fits-all punishment.

What you're proposing here implies that someone feeding a troll, continually getting the wrong forum, or any simple mishap is the exact same thing as someone spamming every thread and forum they go into with links to inappropriate content. That's not fair to the people who make the simple mistakes.

Permanent bans are designed for those who deliberately break the rules, continually, just to get under the mods' skin. And it's not simple stuff either. These people are Pillage, Johhny Orcface, et cetera. The people who do it on a regular basis, from account to account. They are the ones who deserve it. In fact, a permanent ban isn't a punishment enough.

If someone makes a simple mistake that normally lands them with a two-day blacklist, they shouldn't be banned from the website entirely. You didn't exactly think this through, did you?

I can understand your point, but you're only looking at one side of this argument, you've completely missed the other side.
