When you fight a hunter, and they fire at you, what is it that comes out of the weapon? When you look at it, in addition to the arrowhead-shaped plasma burst, you can also see a greenish 'rod' shaped object at the tip, with all these sparks coming off. Many websites say that it is an energy weapon, and yet the manual for Halo PC says that it fires, quote on quote, "explosive projectiles" that arc downwards (obviously), and the books make it sound like it fires only plasma. It seems that there is a contradiction here.
I am aware of the fact that the rods on the weapon, in both the hunter and portable version, power the battery of the device (this is stated on http://library.psyjnir.net/?id=52, which is the fuel rod gun description), and yet, the devices seem to have a seperate source of ammunition, since, if you look carefully, when firing it after a few shots, some sort of projections come out, indicating that there is probably a chamber in it that contains smaller rods.

ummmmmm... purple?
Im just kidding, well, it looks to me like it takes energy from his armor and compresses it into an explosive, the arrow shaped tip that you said looks like its just all the force pulling the energy into a certain shape.

Back in my day we didn't have no fancy lasers, and the hogs were indestructible!

It's just a big, green, explosive version of the needler, it's a magazine fed weapon, but like the needler the magazines consist of plasma projectiles, in this case larger bolts of unstable plasma.
