Let there be CHAOS!

I know the Intel Core 2 Duo is the best processor out there right now, but I'm curious as to how good the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor is. I can save alot of money buying a PC with the Athlon instead of the Core 2 Duo... but if the Athlon is absolute crap compared to the Core 2 Duo then I'll just go with Intel on this one. I just don't want to spend 200 bucks more on a processor that may only out-perform the Athlon by 2% or something lame like that. I'm not a genius when it comes to CPUs, so if anyone could give me an idea of what I should do, they shall receive a thousand internets.. and my thanks.

considering the e6400 performs about the same as the fx-62 there you go.

I see... but is an FX-62 the same thing as an X2 Dual-Core?....

Yes, but the FX > X2

The only real reason to consider buying a X2, is
A: You're on a really tight budget
B: The only game you play is Halo

If I remember correctly the only reason anyone bought the FX processors were for two things:

1. bragging rights
2. unlocked multiplyer

FX's rock but they run wayyyy hotter than the core 2's. an x2 will get you some very nice frames, for example a 4800+ will not bottleneck any direct x nine card, but if you are going to get an 8800gtx, get a core 2.

Well my AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 runs spectacularly. Is a tad bit hot.

well of course it does, but it doesnt mean that the qx6700 is a much better processor.

Best way to choose?

Do it by money, and this....

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=4 33&model2=467&chart=165

So, go find 2 processors that cost roughly the same, one AMD X2 and one core duo.

Then compare them on here.

I did a comparison between

Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13ghz - Skt775 Fsb1066 2mb at £140.95

and

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2.4GHz Socket AM2 L2 1MB 2 x 512 KB at £139.17

And Im sad to say, the duo won quite well. Sad, because Ive always liked AMD, but I do go with whatevers is best moneywise.

For my next computer, it looks like I'll be moving to Intel for the first time in 5 years (or more). Makes sense really.

However, I really dont see the need for anything much more than a dual core processor above the specs above.

If my 3000 (single core) is only just starting to show issues, then buying an uber chip now would be a waste of money.

Well, I just got home and set up my new computer. I broke down and went with the Core 2 Duo E4300... along with 2gb of ddr2 ram, 320gb hard drive, and an ATI Radeon X1600 512mb gfx card. I'm finally freed from my Celeron! Woohoo!

...btw, running Halo PC at 70 FPS with everything on high makes me happy.

Halo runs fine on my 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 HP Pavillion... the only problem is my graphics are a little bottlenecked and i lag a little when there's alot going on on my screen

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

All Intel Processors use Socket 775 now. That means you shouldn't have to worry about matching up sockets for a long time.

Yea, you just need to worry about chipset and voltage compatibilities.

Need to find a cheap X2 for my 939 board. *Sigh*

They are more expensive than flaming AM2 now, but I cant afford a new mobo and ram.
