Just remember that everything goes by halves. Half of 1024 is 512, half of that is 256, half of that is 128, etc. Ergo, if 1 gig is the greatest after 512, you can tell that 1 gig is double of 512.

It's a handy tool for when you forget those numbers.

I want a link because anything like that would be pure research right now.

As for the question, it's a subject of much debate whether megabyte uses the SI prefix meaning 1,000,000(10^6) or the binary prefix 2^20 which is equal to 1,048,576 bytes or 1024 kilobytes. Of course if you want to throw in the term mebibyte which is the more technical definition for a 1024 kilobytes while a megabyte is equal to 1000 kilobytes, you can.

Odd, I seem to recall that 513 is the greatest integer after 512.

I am sure, so very sure that he meant 2^x where 1024 comes after 512 when x is an integer.

I hope at least.

Oh, the irony. I hate math.

This is being all technical and snippy, but I never said integer, I just said "1 gig is the greatest after 512;" it was implied that I meant the greatest common denomination in terms of memory is 1 gig.

And mathematically, it's just [ 2x ]. 2 times of the 512MB=1GB, 2 times of 16MB=32MB, etc.

it goes like this
2^0=1
2^1=2
2^2=4
2^3=8
2^4=16
2^5=32
2^6=64
2^7=128
2^8=256
2^9=512
2^10=1024

Simply because everything computerwise at the most basic level is just either a 1 or 0, thus you have 2 choices.

[delurk]Actually, the most basic level is the amount of voltage going into a circuit. That is one choice.[/delurk]
