Subject: how do you spell colour? color, or colour?

to pronounce "lieutenant" as "lootenant", and "clerk" phonetically is just plain wrong.
Since lieutenant is French, I would imagine that the correct pronunciation would be "loo". But I don't care - "lef" is how it is!

I can guess someone made this point from your last post, but its britain. Im scottish and so would rather not be called english. Any english people that say "i dont want to be called British" should learn there are four other countries in Britain and so Britian emcompasses them all, where we all write colour.

BTW i am more scottish than English, but i consider myself British.

Color, because I live in America. I used to spell it colour, but my English teacher kept getting mad at me.

Language is subjective, so whether a spelling or pronunciation is "correct" or not is wholly dependent on the commonly accepted dialect of the country (or even region). Therefore, "color" is correct usage in America but incorrect basically everywhere else. So we're all correct. Yay! Isn't subjectivism wonderful?

I'm Canadien so I figured I'd say I was british on the poll since thats what I'm closest to (spelling wise). I'm the one person who put British but I spell it color. In my research on languages, I discoverd the important parts of a language. A good language is one that can communicate a clear meessage in the most simple and short manner. The reason a language should be simple is that then it is easier for non-native speakers to learn it, while the other two factors are a matter of effiecency. Everyone knows what I mean when I say color here (in Canada) so it isn't wont affect my communicating ability but it is simpler. Zed becoming ze also makes sense since most consonents are pronounced with a bee at the end, eg. be, ce, de and consistencey is simpler.

So my only question : If I was in GB, and had to say

"I used this bush in lieu of a toilet."

Would I say,

Colour, which is, the correct spelling. Why do you think it's called the English language and not the American? Because it's our language and our spelling. Reiginko was right, but I'm very sensitive. English in, American out.
