[color=white]This guide is ment to help everyone. Not just the newer members. My hopes are that when people look at this, even if they dismiss it as nothing more then a pointless thread, they will remember it. Then later on, when they are about to indulge in an old habit which is frowned upon in these forums, they'll remember this and decide "Hey, mabye it's not worth it." and stop. Now I've divided this into 2 sections, and each of those encompases subsections. The first section is Grammer, and the second is Behavior.

Grammar Section

* Proper Punctuation- This is one of those things that really irritates most users. When people come in and type things like this-
"well halo 2 is gona b a lot better then killzone because halo 2 is made by bungie and we all know how awesome bungie is they made marathon and myth and minotaur and dont forget gnop that game is so badass can i b a mod." Take a breath! Try to slow down, and type as if you were talking. If you want to put emphasis on a certain word, you could also bold it or italicize it. Put periods in the right places, commas, exclamation marks and so on. Contractions don't need to have that much attention paid to them, as pretty much every member including myself forgets to use the apostraphe at some point or another.

* Capilalization and Abbreviation- This ones a biggy. Use the shift key guys, its there for a reason. Another thing is why do you have to abbreviate words that fewer then 7 letters? Also, pay attention now, avoid using the word "n00b" or any related words such as "newb, noob, newbie", or so on. This is an offense and can get you banned. It makes me want to get out my anti-son-of-a--blam!- stick when I see someone typing like this-
"isnt new mobosa so -blam!-???? all tha peeps there r so st00pid. LOL! dem always sayin da good parts in da story. u agree?" and also, avoid using "2" as a substitute for "to" or "too". Try to proofread your posts when your done. I, out of habit, always do this. However I do it after I post it. Then, if I find anything that needs correcting I edit the post.

If there is anything I missed in this section, feel free to post it.

Behavior Section

* Dealing with Spam- As we all know, spammers suck. However, flaming them will only encourage them. The best thing to do is just leave the post alone and notify a mod. I probably isn't a bad idea to post that you have informed a mod, simply so that 10 people arent sending PM's to the mods. If someone has already posted that the mods have been informed, theres no need to do it again.

* Posting Threads- When you post a thread, make sure it serves a purpose. If its simply "I went to the store and saw a box of Goldfish!" then nobody will much care, and you'll probably get flamed quite a bit. Try posting things that will make the forum better. Think about if it's something you would care about. Also, one big thing. Do not make the title all caps. It's so annoying reading "I SAW A HALO 2 COMMERCIAL!!!". I don't see why "I saw the new Halo 2 commercial!" wouldn't do... other then that, just make sure that the first post is pretty organized and well thought out, because I find that if the first post gives me a good impression I tend to post there more, hence progressing the thread.

* Posting Replies- When posting replies, try to remember a few big things. One is make sure it relates to the main idea of the thread. If the subject is "Halo 2 Wepons", don't go in and post about how cool the ghosts new boosting feature is. Also, don't go on for a few sentances about how cool the Battle Rifle is, switch to SMG's, then go back to the Battle Rifle. It just confuses people. Instead consolidate the two Battle Rifle segments into one, so the veiwers aren't confused about which gun your talking about.

Here are a few links I found.

If you're going to make a guide about grammar and forum behavior, at least spell grammar correctly. =)

Dammit, I always do that. I wrote that on my english book.

"Grammer Book"

Ill fix it. Yeah! First Sticky!

It would also help if you spelled, "Behaviour" correct, too. :o

  • 11.08.2004 2:57 PM PDT

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

It would help if you only corrected people on things that needed to be corrected...

Behavior is spelled fine in that. You, my friend, are the one who mispelled it.

My threads aren't my property, they belong to Bungie. And, as it's stickied, that makes it even more their property. So of course you can use it. Even if I did own it, I'd let you.

I was considering doing something like this...but I'm concerned that idiots don't read anyway. Good guide nonetheless.

Idiots do read it... they just pay you out for it...

But it's bout time one of these came up, nice work Pink.

I think it should be necessary (since the flow of people are coming in because of Halo 2), that ESPECIALLY NOW, people should be forced to read something like this. It now annoys me (that's right! even me, a person who's been on the forums 28 days) to see super-incorrect spelling and grammar here.
