They can delete threads.

The purpose of leaving the locked threads up there is an example to other members of what not to do.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

I would assume that they already do have that ability in case of spam or inappropriate topics but I've been out of the loop for a while, so what do I know?

  • 02.03.2007 12:35 PM PDT

SB-117

We can already...

It's just not wise to use it. Locking threads i preferred as it means more reference and less confusion.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

They do have the option to delete threads. Most of the time, they leave the threads there because if they delete them, the creator will often make another one, or make a new thread asking where the old one went.

The locked threads also serve as information for other people about what threads not to make, but if it's a bunch of repeat threads, then I doubt that's the reason.

For optimatch specifically, you might want to talk to Jeremiah about it, since he is the main person in charge there, and from what I understand, make the rules for that forum.

Like the others said, we do have that option but we only delete very rarely. Locking threads servers multiple purposes which is why we mostly lock threads rather than delete them.

They indeed can delete threads Logical. The reason why they don't, as someone said; can't remember which mod. But they are not deleted because of a lesson. This allows people to learn from others mistakes. It is likely that people do not read the locked threads, and therefore do not learn. So, as stated above, they are not deleted for a lesson can be learned from them. It is just the matter if somone will read them.

I hate when mods delete threads.

Locked threads are an eyesore but they do not clog up discussion.

Posted by: Logical Thinking
I've seen a LOT of locked threads clogging up discussion in certain forums, especially optimatch and new mombassa. In these areas repeat threads are commonly locked and fill up the forums. Optimatch is by far the worst, threads concerning removed lists that should be in the dedicated areas. These threads IMO should be deleted in an effort to better allow discussions. Just go take a look at the second page of optimatch, it is full of locked threads.

Thoughts?

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

Plus...when a mod removes a thread, usually the OP of the original thread will either make another duplicate thread, or make a thread saying, "where did my thread go?!?!?11"

So leaving the locked thread, however *annoying* it is, serves a much better purpose and actually allows for less locked threads in the future (theoretically).

Moderators can already delete topics or individual replies. I understand your woes but a lot of locked threads is better than a lot of deleted threads. While deleting topics may make the forums seem nice and clean, it also removes vital information we may need to pursue cases. Thusly Moderators should sparingly use the delete button and only in the most extreme of cases and even now those are becoming increasingly rare.

Deleting a thread can lead to confusion. Ex- "Where did my -blam!- thread go!"
Locking a thread leads to less confusion.

did you read my second post?

Mods have the power, it's just teh rules that they must lock a thread unless it is really dire, in which case they can delete it.

BB ~ why not have an automatic response to OP's of deleted threads? When a thread is deleted, they receive a message something along the lines of;

"your thread '........' was deleted for violating the forum rules. Posting about deleted threads in any way will lead to suspension from the forums for a period to be determined by the moderator."

Saying the OP will make a new thread is pointless, with a quick PM [or an automatic one] this wouldnt be a problem.

Regardless of what anyone may say; locking threads reduces discussion.

Do you have any idea how much strain that would put on the server? And it would lead to spam, with people competing for the most "ur thred = loked' messages a day.

  • 02.03.2007 8:32 PM PDT

I think weird threads like this should be deleted.

Oh definitely. Why don't you ask Achronos how many threads are locked a day?

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Little to none. Our database servers use very little CPU. Well, except for the stats database. That's quite active. But the forum database isn't that intensive. It is just large (like 12 gigs now). Managing the simultaneous access when things are busy - that's the tricky part. When things go down due to load, that's usually what the problem is - not CPU, but running out of connections or some sort of resource deadlock.

Of course, that's moot. Locked threads don't hurt anything - it occassionally looks kind of weird when there is a page of them, but who cares? Better than having the entire conversation wiped from existence (in most cases).

Are you serious? Locked threads are terrible; they take up valuable space on a (usually) sticky covered first page of a forum. After the number of stickies and locked threads has been taken away from the 25, you're left with about 18 to 10 in the worst cases. How can that be a good thing?

A decent thread has a lifespan of about 5 hours unless it's created at peak times, i.e. when America is awake and spamming. If you;

A] don't trust your moderators enough that you need evidence as to why they locked a thread / blacklisted a member
B] quite like the look of a page or two of locked threads
C] don't mind fewer active discussion threads on the first page

then the current system is a very good one.
