I'm going to a big sale next weekend, and I was wondering what you guys thought about these parts...

-A dual core 3.6 GH motherboard with one AGP slot, some PCI slots, and 1 or 2 (can't remember) PCI-E slots. ($78)

-A Radeon X1650 ($140)

Edited to be slightly neater....

How in the world can a motherboard be dual core? And forget the x1650, it's a waste for $140.

Well, the 256MB goes for around $90, so maybe it's the 512?

512MB on that class of card would be a waste.

I think what he means is the motherboard has a duel core processor in it. If so not bad those go for about little more than that but the Radon X1650 id put a little more money up, you can get better

In that case, the X1650's a good choice. Maybe.

ATI sucks.

Don't get it. Period.

GeForce series are much better, the older drivers work better than the newer ones and ATI's combined, cost-efficient, and faster. EVGA ftw.

Way to provide a reason as to why ATI supposedly 'sucks'.

commas=win
3.6 dual core? Do those even exist? I'm not sure how you have one AGP, AND one or two PCI-E slots. I highly doubt there are sli boards with AGP much less going for $78.

You can get boards with both PCI-e and AGP such as this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681315709 7, actually, thats the only one I know of. But seriously, he doesnt know what he is talking about and just throwing out terms.

  • 02.04.2007 8:25 PM PDT

Get Marathon Here
Get Marathon 2 and Infinity Here

Unless the board he is looking at is one of those back room jobs that isn't certified : /

And do not touch that ATI card, the only good ATI cards are their current gen cards, but I am waiting more to see how AMD helps solve ATI's driver shortcommings.

The Frys sale paper mostly just has pictures, so I had to guess what it had. I DO know quite a bit about how a computer works, I'm just not familiar with the slot colors. The board I saw stated it was a duel core, with 3.6 gigahertz. I saw that it had a few white slots, a brownish-reddish slot, and a small white slot. If I was wrong in thinking that the colors actually meant something, then I'm sorry that I was told wrong.

I guess my main shortcoming is the fact that I learned just about everything I know from 2 very old copies of "Upgrading and Fixing Computers for Dummies"....

It's a decent rig, but i recommend waiting for the DX10 chips. Or still wait for DX10, then the DX9 range cards will substantially reduce in price.

That's actually a pretty good idea, the more money I can save, the better.

So what about the X1700? Is it any good. My main choice as the 1600 was made based on the fact that it is more heat efficient, therefore easier to overclock...

QFGDMFT. And EVGA's for the definite win.

white slots are PCI
Brownish-Reddish is AGP
small white is PCI-E X2
(you need X16 for a pci-e vid card)

Actually, expansion slot colors vary by motherboard and manufacturer.

Case in point, where as, my PCI-E x16 slots are black and blue. (SLI)

But to add on to that, I think its just preference. I tend to stick with ATI, as cards are a tad cheaper, and are either more heat efficient or energy efficient than the NVidia equivalent.

I dont need to be rude, but this is halo pc disscussion only, just talking about a computer doesnt cut it.

I will say that on the superbowl day on a commercial I saw a quad core, no joke, it looks pretty cool, If i were you id try to get that, if they really meant quad core

Who cares if it's about computers, it's relevant to halo pc becuase you need one to play. Not to mention the forward looking halo 2 vista and finding a computer to adequately support it.

Quad core has been out for a while now.
