Subject: Should Bungie upgrade to vBulletin?

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Wouldn't changing systems also mean all the users would have to re-register? Along with all the threads and groups and such being lost? Ideal science is the only one I know if that has the group feature period... I'd use it for my site, but it costs money. :/
Another great point! Do you gys have any idea how much Achronos had to pay to get Ideal Science! I don't think he would change after that either.

Ideal Science is very expensive. I beleive Achronos purchased the Enterprise package. The Enterprise Package cost about 4,000 big ones so I don't think it will change.

Even the standard package is a fair amount for a standard site. I'm not about to go blow all my money off for a forum system. Oh how I wish they came out with a free one....

I heard somewhere that IS ran the development of new patches and stuff through data that Achronos gives them, is that even remotely true?

Invisionfree can handle ALOT more than you guys think. Look at IFSZ they have around 200,000 members.

Good for IFSZ.

Bungie.Net practically has more forums than they do users.

Or did you forget about the Seventh Column?

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

I think that IdealScience is the best choice for this board now and the future. IdealScience Technology isn't free. I don't know how much the software that they chose to purchase cost. However I know that Achronos did extensive customization to the board and tools.

"Upgrade to vBulletin"

Isn't that an oxymoron? Unless, of course, you're on phpBB to start with...

Although, this current incarnation of IdealScience is a bit crap, its difficult to navigate from section to section, but that can be fixed with the addition of a few links here and there. But thats probably because i don't use that overly large navbar at the bottom..

Maybe Bungie should upgrade the forums to vBulletin. Ideal Science isn't the top notch kind of forum anyway. Besides, Invisionfree is better than Ideal Science. I was thinking Bungie should do some upgrading because there forums are losing their teh hawtness!

I wouldn't mind custom avatars if we have an update anytime soon. But w/e, I know why it can't happen.

I think Bungie's forum layout is the best.

Actually, we hired IdealScience to write forum software to our specs, with the provision that they could repackage their work and sell it later as IdealBB.NET. So... the version we have is a highly customized build... and is not anything you can buy, although their Enterprise version would probably be the closest.

And we have way more than 200,000 active accounts. This forum's only real fault is the restrictive layout - which is not a function of the forum itself, but rather of bungie.net. Like many things... we're working on it.

Again, that is not entirely correct. Bungie.net (as a whole) is powered by an application called "BlamDotNet" which is a .NET 2.0 ASP.NET app that I am mostly responsible for (although runningturtle has started to help too), with many supporting modules. One, called BungieNet.Renderer, is all the actual pages and layout. Another, called BungieNet.Engine, runs all the security, groups, and account stuff. Another, called BungieNet.Appserver, interfaces with the stats system for Halo 2 and provides data for Engine and Renderer to show you stats. Also, another module is the IdealScience.IBB module, which powers all the forum stuff. It uses authentication and security services from BungieNet.Engine and uses BunigeNet.Renderer to produce the pages.

So, as you can see, layout and UI is not a product of the forum code. Part of its design means that the UI of the forum is entirely customizable. Which is a round about way of saying that problems with Bungie.net's forum layout exist, but are not due to the forum software itself.
