Subject: Day of Reckoning

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

As depressing as it is to see all of these spam topics, I am glad that the moderators are trying to stay on top of them, though it seems they have more than their fair share of canned meat apiece!

Of course, once this madness is over, things should get back to normal. Unfortunately, at the rate this sign up is going, that doesn't seem to be for a while!

Too bad B.net can't Deputize members.

I think we can all agree that they are doing a spectacular job despite the overwhelming majority of those members who don't realize they are destroying this place.

Hope you don't develope Carpal Tunnel clicking "lock topic" too much!

Yeah, the old one didn't reflect the point I was trying to make...

Although this isn't necessarily a bad idea, it is somewhat pointless. The idea of having member's act as moderators (thus, moderators, as they are still members) is to make sure that the forums run smoothly. We don't need the moderators policing deputy's policing the forums. One layer is enough.

Plus nothing really gets stuck for too long as it is, and at any given point of time there's at least one moderator online.

lol, I know, I know...

Just kinda an after thought.

I was absolutely astonished how much crap was on the Halo 3 forums for the past 18 hours. There're a lot of not-too-bright people out there.

I think you should have said 'Emergency Moderators', which is an idea I (and many others, I'm sure) think would be a great help.

I am...whimsical today.

If you can't trust a person to police the Forums all the time, then how can you trust them to do so for short periods? If you think a person is suitable then you may as well make them a full-time moderator.

The point is, give the emergencies lock/move powers only. That way, no permanent damage is done if someone abuses the power.

If someone is trusted enough to be granted temporary moderator powers, they're trusted enough to be given full powers, imo. Because of the way the site is structured, its just as easy to pull a full mod's rights as it would be a demi-mod.

I'm glad you linked us to a definition of "deputize." We are but humble pirates, and big words over two syllables confuse us.

Why would Bungie deputize people when they can just appoint qualified individuals as ninjas?

  • 02.05.2007 3:09 PM PDT

SB-117

I've locked about 30 threads in as many minutes. Someone please... kill me.

  • 02.05.2007 3:11 PM PDT

With the lockdown put into effect by Yoozel, the mods who were on did a good job. We don't need any temp-moderators. I think most of us have grown used to the shenanigans perpetuating in the Halo 3 forum anyway. Nevertheless, at least one thread really degenerated into a chat room striving for the most threads/pages in a 24-hour span with no real discussion and yet is still open. I guess it just became the place to spam to at least keep it in one thread.

But the point is, emergency mods wouldn't need full powers, therefore, would not need to be trusted with full powers, therefore, would not need to be trustworthy enough to be made full mods, therefore people who are more trustworthy than most forum-goers, but less so than ninjas, could use the emergency powers.

Damn, I feel like Mojo-Jojo...

Your circular logic is dizzying. Again, why would Bungie appoint people to run around locking threads when they have moderators to do that job. Moderators who were carefully chosen to do the job the correct way.

If there is a reason to appoint temporary or deputized ninjas, then there is a reason to appoint more qualified moderators.

BECAUSE OF ALL THE SPAM CAUSED BY THE H3 BETA!
Sorry about that, but people don't seem to understand the situation.

I can tell you mean business because you typed in all caps.

I do understand the situation, and right now there are 4-5 ninjas on duty. I have all the faith in the world that they can competently lock all the threads needed to satisfy your thirst for deputized forum members who would cause mass confusion and make the actual ninjas job even harder than it already is.

We'll all look back on this a year or two from now and laugh.. and also say "hey nub I was here before Halo 3 came out, those were the good 'ol days!"

*shakes head while chuckling at the cyclic nature of this forum community*

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

It was pretty hectic for awhile. I quick counted all the threads I locked yesterday, and I counted about 100 threads. Those are the ones I locked, so the total must be over 250 so far.

It seems to be slowing down now though.

  • 02.05.2007 4:59 PM PDT

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Wow, 250, you have only been a mod for about 2 weeks, 3 weeks!

Actually, the 250 number is the total locked (when I did a quick count) threads, and I know I didn't lock that many. I could not have locked more than 100, and that's probably an over estimation anyway.

All the other ninjas must have been busy too.

Oh well, at least we know that Bungie.net can handle all that insanity. We've got a bulletproof board here.

Expecting order in Halo 3 is like asking for peace and quiet at Chuck E. Cheese.

It is not afflicted with chaos, it IS chaos.

But it is self-contained chaos.

Why do parents give/build their kids sandboxes? So they aren't digging up the flower gardens and tracking dirt/mud into the house.

Halo 3 = sandbox

Shhhhhhhh. It's a secret.

I guessed as much. When people always attacked my theory that "Bungie doesn't check threads (for the most part) in the Halo 3 forum" with "Then why did they make it?", I would always respond "To keep you from destroying the Halo 2 forum..."

However, you bring up an interesting point in Halo 3 being chaos. I have a feeling that it's chaos not by nature, but by the lack of discipline. Is it a bad thing? Not really. Like you stated, it was made to protect the "flowerbeds" of B.net.

I just think that, with several swift kicks in the arse, the Halo 3 forum could be brought to a more respectable conclusion.
