Subject: Larry Niven...

that which is not dead can eternal lie, but with strange aeons even death may die.

For those who know who Larry Niven is, and have read his books, you will know that he had an unbelievably large impact on Halo. Even before Halo even egsited in the minds of men...

Now I dont want to anger the higher ups...

but has Bungie ever given credit to him as his world in there Halo games?

Because personally I have never heard them ever mention him, and he is really worth mentioning,

BTW: the book he wrote was called "Ringworld" it was published in 1970's and there are 4 sequels to it, most of the story setting takes place on a Dyson ring (a halo). Execpt that the diameter of the ring is 1 AU. and it is huge.

it makes halo look like a kids hoola hoop.

{again, this post is directed to those of the Bungie personel, and Moderators that know of Larry Niven and his Ringworld.}

Bungie's Halos orbit planets, Niven's orbit (rotate round, really, but that's beside the point) stars. Big huge difference.

Nope, he ain't on the Bungie Team. Must be some loner.

no he isnt on the Bungie team, he is a world famous author.

he has one many awards, including a Nebula.

ahem...

ok, how about this. I'm saying that Larry Niven came up with halo almost 30 years before Bungie did...and his was better, bigger, and was physically possible, within certain science fiction parameters.

Yes, I noticed that the leader and founder of HBO calls himself Louis Wu...

I never did think it was a coincidence though, I must admit, Its nice to know that the Halo fans do read books, and very good ones at that.

but I personally like Chmee (Speaker to Animals) I always found his character to be very good, as well as Nessus and the Hindmost.

Yes, I was aware that Bungie did get "ideas" from many sources, I just was not aware that they had paid homage and respect to he who made their game possible.

I mean, I would love to see his name in the Halo credits at least, but then I guess you could argue that he didnt really "make" the game, just a major setting for it...

And the main character in Ringworld.... is who?

hahaha It's the one who runs HBO.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Since we've already settled the Ringworld question, I'll interject my opinion on the books themselves.

I never liked them that much. I have to give him credit for such a good original concept, and the first book was pretty good, but once there was the vampire thing and the tree of life I stopped reading because he seemed to be really reaching. Authors often lose focus when they try to go back and explain things. See the steady degradation and decline of Arthur C Clarke's Rama or Space Odyssey series.

But I read them a while ago, so I may be misremembering.

Bungie might have some extremely creative individuals, but all people draw inspiration from somewhere. These days it is almost near impossible to come up with something completely original, without being inspired by something that already exists in some way, shape or form.

If you don't got it, you want it. If you got it, you want more of it. Of course if you don't know what it is, it's hard to get any in the first place.

Personally I blame Tolkien, World War 2, George Lucas, 2001 Space Odessey... anything missing? Oh right, subcategories

Wing Commander, Aliens, Star Control 2, and the Wheel of Time/ The Black Company.

If you understand the logic behind these choices your either a Huge Geek, or a Bungie fan.

Did I miss anything?

I would like Bungie to bring something in from HP lovecraft's works...

but thats just me...

By the way, for anyone who read the books, does anyone think that the Arbiter looks a great deal how the Pak Protectors were described?

Phrog pilots, reckless and free. We would strap into our birds, set the engines on fire, and leave these earthly bonds with a chorus of WHOP WHOP WHOP. Akin to beating your chest and howling in defiance at the rest of the world.

You could just blame Norse mythology for most of the worlds inspiration.

Not really, as Pack Protectors are humanoid in build, they don't have reverse-articulate-knees, they have a beak like mouth, and their gaunt, not built like a body builder or Elite, with much larger joints to allow for greater range of motion and more powerful movement.

That and the second heart in the groin area...

But then we don't know that Elites don't have a second heart down there.

And I personally don't really see too much of a similarity between Halo and Ringworld. Halo is obviously much smaller, does not rely on it's spin for gravity, and is a weapon before anything else.

Though I do wonder at the relative level of technology between the Pak Protectors and the Forruners...the Pak Protectors wiped themselves out on their homeworld in a nuclear war, leaving mankind, the "dumb breeder" stage of Pak development alone on their colony on Earth, and elsewhere I believe. We then developed on our own, but unlike in Halo, men did not discover faster than light technology in the Ringworld universe, it was given to them by another race in exchange for trade rights or a planet or something.

I wonder how much either the Pak or the Puppeteers influenced Bungie's idea behind the Forruners.

No, I mean the armour that the Arbiter was wearing had that beak-like protusion from the center, the armour seemed to splay out by the wrists, etc.

PS- In Ghosts of Onyx the term Bandersnatch was used. This had a dual meaning because it is from mythology and it is an alien species from the Known Space (Ringworld) Universe.

Hehe. I believe he did.

Personally, I really enjoyed Ringworld. I mean, some parts of it dragged on, but the concept of it was pretty cool. I even loved the idea of the meteor puncturing a hole in it, creating a large mountain.

It was just a great concept, in my opinion.. And yes, Bungie is a bunch of un-creative idea-stealing jerks.

So?
