While installing a HD is not overly complicated, if you screw something up (and pretty much the only thing you can screw up is the master/slave setting), then it will probably frighten you as your computer may not boot to windows. That said, it's easy to un-do what you've done, re-read installation instructions and try again. You might want to give it a try...
I have a 300gig Seagate and am happy with it, but I wouldn't recommend a single drive any larger. While Seagate's have a great reputation, it's always possible they will fail sometime down the road, and if you've got all your data (~500 gigs) on one drive, and it fails, you might be a little upset.
Hell, I'm pretty paranoid about backing up my music collection on DVD's, and this HD is only a little over a year old. back up back up back up.
