While installing a HD is not overly complicated, if you screw something up (and pretty much the only thing you can screw up is the master/slave setting), then it will probably frighten you as your computer may not boot to windows. That said, it's easy to un-do what you've done, re-read installation instructions and try again. You might want to give it a try...

I have a 300gig Seagate and am happy with it, but I wouldn't recommend a single drive any larger. While Seagate's have a great reputation, it's always possible they will fail sometime down the road, and if you've got all your data (~500 gigs) on one drive, and it fails, you might be a little upset.

Hell, I'm pretty paranoid about backing up my music collection on DVD's, and this HD is only a little over a year old. back up back up back up.

Get Marathon Here
Get Marathon 2 and Infinity Here

As long as you know you have an SATA connnection on your mobo, go for it.

Personally I am holding out for SSD's. So far they have a 128GB 2.5" model for laptops in devopment, and the read/write limit is somewhere around a million, aka say goodbye to HDDs in the near future.

And I already got a 250GB WD drive three years ago for 150 bucks, so I'm still good.

Heyyo,

Is it SATA or IDE?

well guys, you could've easily checked Best Buy's site (kinda crappy nav setup they got, but still works...) and gotten the specs.. here's the HDD

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langi d=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10078427&catid=20240

It's the same HDD's I bought twice, and both are working fine for me. I say buy em', well worth the cash. =D

So from that link, you can easily see, it's SATA, and has a 16MB Cache on it, and that it's an internal HDD.

Easy!.. If there is a slot on it about 3-4mm tall 2cm wide and an L shape it SATA (This applies for both your drive & Mobo.
If it is about 5-6cm wide and made up of about 20 pins its IDE (same applications again)

Fair point with the google image search SATA Slot and IDE .
By the way seriously Get the drive if the conections are correct!
Im running 720GB Excluding my iPod (Incl. 800GB) and that cost me just over £150 (Roughly $300) So yours is not bad value per GB!

Ok, I probably got an IDE slot. But does all SATA slots have the color red? If that's true, then I DEFINITELY have an IDE slot.

And whoever said my 320 Gig was a SATA, thanks for the post, but you were completely wrong. It's an IDE interface, and by Western Digital.

Almost every computer made in the past 15+ years has IDE, it just depends on your motherboard has SATA also.

I don't think that really helps out on how to sort what by what. Even pictures tend to be misleading.

My question is, are ALL SATA slots, red colored? I need to be sure, I don't want to end up buying IDE HD for a SATA, or vice versa.

If you have a sata connector on your M/Board it would look like these:- http://www.tomshw.it/guides/motherboard/20060522/images/foxco nn_sata_connector.jpg

I have 4, all different colours, red, black, yellow and blue although like most things they could be any colour under the sun!

If you look on your board and have ribbons that go off to CD drives, they are usuall IDE cables and there is NORMALLY two (2 devices on each cable).

---

Whichever it is, it is simply: Opening the case, screwing the drive into place, attaching a power cable, attaching a data cabe, setting the jumpers then re-sealing the case. If it is a SATA drive it is even easier as there are no master/slave settings to worry about!
