Subject: Why doesn't Bungie.net have a ladder system?

July 15, 2008... The day the timer stood still.

One cool little thing about Xbox.com is that its forums have a ladder that shows members who are veteran, or just plain nice. If you post a lot, you go from a community level of one to two, then two to three, etc. Moderators also have the ability to give users little rewards which show up whenever they post. Why can't Bungie.net have something like this? It would encourage people to post more. It's not like those people who have a higher community level will have special privaledges, but it would be nice to know who in the community is helpful and active, and who's just a jerk.

Get Marathon Here
Get Marathon 2 and Infinity Here

To beat it into our skulls that we are all equal, despite our number of posts or length of time here.

The reason they don't have it is because Elitism would run rampant, and then demands for privilages would start. Everyone here is equal under the Rules and it's enforcement by the Moderators, if you want to stand out, then you can create a custom theme and hope it gets accepted so that you can have a unique avatar.

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

So rather than members posting often because they care about the community, or like the discussions, we should encourage them to post so that they get a gold star?

Every time I hear an idea like this, whether it be ranks, privileges, etc., I always wonder how such ideas help the community besides rewarding people for good behavior, which, no matter how you say it, still ends up sounding like people wanting to show others that they are better.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Systems such as that fail when they are subject to user input. If any such system were to be created, it would be focused around determining how "trustworthy" a user is, and would not have any user input other than the history of moderation against an account. Another important thing is that rewards for being a "good community member" have to such that you can't tell how close you are to getting them. Basically, everything about such a system should be hidden so it can't be "gamed". Only then can elitism be avoided - if you don't know how you got an "Veteran Member" title, for example, you can't really lord it over everyone. And if you do, then you aren't deserving of the title, and the moderators can discipline you for it, thus knocking you down a few pegs.

Theoretically, of couse. ;)

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

You know, I read that on the Halo: CE manual...6 years ago!

What kind of timeframe does Bungie have in mind when they say "Nigh!" It's just getting rediculous.

Why can't Bungie.net have something like this? It would encourage people to post more.

Or spam more.

I.e. replying to a thread just to say "No" or quoting everyone merely to say "I agree!"

In the end (especially on a site like this) it just wouldn't work out. Bungie.net isn't like other forums. Sometimes we need to be babied (because sometimes we don't know what's good for us LOL)

Don't be so negative, don't think of it as the "end" but rather a termination of current norms for the creation of a new situation involving aspects not found in previous times.

Got a report? Use the report tool or send a pm.
Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

If we're trying to combat elitism, putting the member since date back there would be ever so slightly counter-productive.

Now that you've taken the time to look at my sig, I actually regret not providing you with something more worthwhile.

There is only one way I know of that they distinguish between normal members and members that are just a wee bit more awesome than the "normies." These special members are assigned an account name consisting of two E's, an M, a C, a V, two I's, and an H. These letters are arranged by Achronos in a manner that makes them appear to be a normal name, then that name is assigned to the member.

As you probably could have guessed, there aren't many members that receive this honor.

M6D Pistol - $190
BR55 Battle Rifle - $320
Halcyon-Class Cruiser - $198,783,189,420.92
Taking out an entire Covenant Armada all by your lonesome - Priceless
There are some things marines can't do.
For everything else, there's Master Chief.

A ladder system huh? Here is my thoughts not that anyone cares lol. There are members of the Bungie Community who are more active than say a member like myself who works beyond full time and has less time to spare to contribute. I'm not saying that these members have absolutely no life at all, I'm just saying some members have absolutely no free time in their lives. A ladder system would favorite those who spend more time on the forums posting and contributing than it would those of us who do contribute but not as much as the more active members mainly because of our lifestyle and schedule. "Of course thats just my opinion, I could be wrong"

I think the way it is done now is just fine, just because there is a ladder system doesn't mean a site will get more (better) traffic. It's the content of the site and the atmosphere of the forums that dictate the activity level.

For example, in the Halo 3 forum there is zero problem of people posting, much of it garbage, due to Halo 3 being new, exciting, and largely unknown.

The others have little new information to stir discussion, and so are relatively quiet.

No, the mods shouldn't have to judge you in any way other than for the purposes of rules.

When I said "no user input" - I meant it. Systems such as this that require user input almost always fail.

Posted by: Logical Thinking
If you were going to do this you would have to only allow mods to add or subtract points, NOT members, you would also have to make it easy for a mod to do so they would actually use it, and finally you would have to make the reason's for gaining points something based on the quality of the post, yet keep this criteria private.

Hive Mice was a better member I think, Senor. =)

I recommend a system whereby saying the word "lol" reduces your rank!

Ah, I'm just bitter, I hate that "word". Lol. LOL lol. Grrr...

I like how everyone's a "Member". Unfortunately it seems we may have a rank/karma system coming judging from Achronos' theoretical post ~ but I trust he'll make it work. =)
