Halo 3: ODST

Q. I’m getting this message: “This will erase your campaign progress, but not your VISR COMM data. Continue?” What does it mean?

A. It means exactly what it says. You’re about to erase your save data, INCLUDING YOUR HUB PROGRESS. It’s probably best that you back away slowly unless you’re sure you want to start from scratch. You won’t lose any mission unlock or audio logs, but for unlocks and achievements that require you to play through all of the missions, you’ll be starting from square one. Same goes if you happen to be on your way to earning a mission-specific achievement.

Q. I’ve got room on my hard drive, should I install this sucker?

A. Yup. We optimized ODST’s campaign and Firefight for installation. Just like all NXE installations, you’ll need to keep your copy in the drive to play.

Q. I just want to explore the hub. How do I do that?

A. A direct insertion point for the hub, “Mombasa Streets,” isn’t readily available until you’ve completed all of the campaign missions on at least Normal difficulty. Until then, you’ll need to save and quit while you’re in the city at night and then you can select “Resume…” from the Mission select menu to explore the city as the Rookie. Of course, if you were in a daytime mission when you last saved, that’s where the game will return you.

Once you’ve completed the game, you can select “Mombasa Streets” whenever you like.

Q. I've started unlocking the secret side story, but I can't find all of the pieces! Where are they?!

A. Well, we're not going to tell you exactly where to find them, but we can tell you that they are not all available the moment you set foot in New Mombasa. Maybe you should complete more (or all) of the missions and check back later.

Q. What about co-op? My friend told me the campaign was only single player.

A. Your friend is a low down, good for nothin’, two-for-a-nickel liar. Just like Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST can be played all the way through with up to four players. Only two players per console on splitscreen though, so you’ll need at least two 360’s and two televisions (and probably some snacks).

Q. So what’s the co-op catch?

A. Ah, there’s always a catch, isn’t there? Here are a few details we think you should know before heading in:

  • The co-op “saved state” will always default to the party leader’s saved game data. If you’re going through the campaign with a full crew, make sure the same player always retains the party lead if you have to make the run in multiple sessions. This will also affect parties where members are being swapped in and out on the fly. It’ll also have an effect upon mission-specific achievements.
  • Once you’ve unlocked a campaign mission, whether in solo or co-op, it will be selectable in the Replay Mission menu for solo and co-op games, with the exception of Mombasa Streets. That mission will only unlock if you play through the game start-to-finish, using the same save state. You’ll always know where you’re about to clear the saved game state. In co-op, you’ll get this fancy message: "This will erase your co-op campaign progress. Continue?”  The single player version of this message is similar.  You can read about it here if you're still confused.
  • Unlike mission unlocks, audio logs are not universal. Your solo collection operates independently of your co-op collection. If you collect ten audio logs with a friend, when you return to your solo run, they won’t be available. You gotta snag ‘em on your own. You will however, be able to listen to any terminals the party leader has collected in a co-op game, though you won’t retroactively earn the achievements for them.

Q. Cool. So, when can I play the Halo: Reach Beta?

A. Not so fast. Soon. The Halo 3: ODST disc serves as your invitation though, so hold onto your plastic. Oh, and it’s a Multiplayer only beta and you’ll need Xbox LIVE Gold. Head on down to the next question for related goodies.

Q. What’s this “Extras” menu thing?

A. Eventually, this is where you’ll access the Halo: Reach Xbox LIVE Mulitplayer Beta we were just chatting about. For now, you’ll notice it contains some ODST related media. There’s more on the way. When there’s new stuff, we’ll let you know.

Q. You said this bad boy had leaderboards and stats and stuff. I’m staring at my computer screen and I don’t see anything. Where are they?

A. Bungie.net. Make a profile and link it to your Windows LIVE ID. Click on your Service Record in the title bar on the upper right hand side of the site. It’s free and it’s spectacular.

Halo 3: Mythic (Disc 2)

Q. So how does this disc work? ‘Splain it to me.

A. Halo 3: Mythic is Disc 2, packed in alongside Halo 3: ODST’s campaign and Firefight disc. From Halo 3: Mythic, you can play every Halo 3 multiplayer map right from disc, with the same population that’s already playing it from the original Halo 3 disc. You won’t notice any difference at all in terms of functionality. All you custom content will work, your skill ratings will remain intact, and you’ll have access to the full range of online playlists.

Q. Well, I’m just going to rip the maps down to my drive and pass the disc over to a friend who doesn’t have any of the maps. That’s cool, right?

A. Not really. Plus, it doesn’t work that way. You don’t install this disc or download these maps from Marketplace. You run them right from the disc.

Q. So, if I’ve got room on my hard drive, I should install this sucker for faster loading?

A. Nope. Halo 3: Mythic is for all intents and purposes, Halo 3. When we built Halo 3, NXE installations were the stuff of the future. As a result, installing Halo 3: Mythic will result in slower load times for you and all your friends (and people you care about will be disappointed in you).

Q. I already have all the DLC for Halo 3. Can I just buy the three new maps on Marketplace?

A. Not right now. We’re not aware of any concrete plans to make Heretic, Citadel, and Longshore available as DLC. For the time being, the only way to get them is through Halo 3: ODST.

Xbox LIVE and Achievements

Q. I’m not earning my mission completion achievements! Halp!

A. Are you playing on Easy? You gotta play on at least Normal to earn those. A baby could complete those on Easy. You’re not a baby, are you?

Q. I’m still not earning my mission completion achievements!

A. You need to play the mission from start to finish in one, continuous play session.

Q. I just played all the way through the Highway level and didn’t fire a shot. Did I get the achievement? No. No I didn’t. Now I hate you. What do you have to say for yourself?

A. Honk? No seriously, don’t honk the horn. It counts as a trigger pull. Sure, you’re not firing, but you’re launching an assault on everyone’s eardrums.

Q. I was just like Marty and didn’t get any kills. Why didn’t I get the stinkin’ achievement?

A. Marty doesn’t get assists either. Follow him on Twitter!

Q. Hey! I just found all the clues in the city and never got my Super Sleuth achievement! What gives, you monkey-lovin’ jerks?!

A. You have to earn Super Sleuth by playing through in a single save session. That doesn’t mean that you can’t save and quit, but it does mean that you can’t erase your save data to replay another mission and then return to your core play through later.

Q. Hey! I just completed the game and Mombasa Streets isn’t unlocked! What gives, you stupid-faced jerks?!

A. You probably resumed a co-op game from the main menu. You’ll have to play whichever missions you haven’t earned shields for from start to finish, without quitting midstream.

Q. Hey! I just completed one of the missions and didn’t get my shield! What gives, you rat-faced mongrel?!

A. See above. In fact, if you’re gunning for achievements and shields for completing missions, you shouldn’t erase your campaign progress. Saving and quitting your game is just fine and before you ever erase any of your data, you’ll be prompted. Like this:

This will erase your campaign progress, but not your VISR COMM data. Continue?

Q. Seems like the frame rate went all wonky! My controls aren't responding! What's going on?!

A. You're probably experiencing networking latency.  If you're playing over Xbox LIVE, the networking model is based on Halo 3's campaign technology and the way the game is affected by "lag" is a bit different then it is in the multiplayer space.  The best way to avoid sub par performance is to make sure you have a solid host and to turn off any networking applications you aren't using while you play (stop torrenting stuff).

Q. I GOT ALL THE CHIEVEMENTS! WHERE'S MAH RECON!

A. Your most recent games make take a brief spell to upload to Bungie.net.  Patience is a virtue. Your wait shouldn't be too long, though.  At most, a few hours barring extenuating circumstances.  If they do not upload, you should make certain that your console is online, connected to Xbox LIVE with the correct profile, and then you'll need to obtain the relevant Vidmaster achievement(s) again.

If your games have uploaded to your Bungie.net Service Record, you should contact us via email (bnetbugs at bungie.com).  Please include a brief description of your problem, your Xbox LIVE gamertag, and a link to the game data showing that you've earned the achievement(s) in question.

If you are a low down dirty modding jerk, then get lost.

Q. How many achievement points are packed into Halo 3: ODST?

A. This is gonna get messy.

  • Campaign: 750

Halo 3 DLC achievements: 750
