Credits (cR)

Credits in Halo: Reach can be earned across all game modes (excluding Theater Mode) and are used to determine your current grade and to purchase new Armory items, Firefight Voices, and Armor Effects.

Spending Credits will NOT lower your rank. Lifetime Credits earned are tracked separately to determine your current overall grade. Spend those Credits!

  • Offline, Silver, and Gold profiles can all earn Credits for playing the game; however there are some key differences you should be aware of:
  • Gold Profiles (Connected to LIVE)
  • Gold Xbox LIVE will earn Credits in all game modes and do not have any special rules.
  • Silver Profiles (Connected to LIVE)
  • Silver Xbox LIVE profiles can earn Credits in all game modes except Matchmaking (since they cannot access it). They cannot play in Xbox LIVE sessions either.

Offline Profiles

Offline profiles (also known as local profiles) can earn Credits in Campaign, Firefight, Custom Games and Forge. They cannot play in Matchmaking or in Xbox LIVE sessions.

Going Online for the First Time

If you initially earn offline Credits and then take your profile online, there will be a onetime check to see how many Credits you’ve acquired. If that amount is over 26,250, you will need to forfeit some Credits. This check is in place to ensure a level playing field and to eliminate foul play.

If you choose not to authenticate, you can still play online, but you will subsequently appear as a default Spartan with a default emblem and colors. If you want to change your mind, simply reboot your console and upon your next foray into online matchmaking, you'll be prompted again.

If you have purchased shiny new Armory items, the authentication process may reclaim armor pieces in order to bring the Credits balance into a positive state. The end result is Armor + Credits = 26,250. No more, no less.

If you have less than 26,250 lifetime Credits earned when you go online for the first time, you won’t have to worry about any of this complicated math.

Note: Authenticating Credits does not provide any personal information to Bungie. It’s only used to track Credits per gamertag.

Once you authenticate your Credits with our online servers, you will not see the Credit loss dialog ever again (unless you decide to create a new profile). If you go back to playing offline, the game will simply cap you at 1,000 Credits per day until you reconnect to LIVE. If you are playing while connected to LIVE, there is no cap and you can earn Credits to your heart’s content.

Challenges

Challenges are a new system for Halo that provides daily and weekly trials for players to complete in order to earn piles of bonus Credits. Challenges are only available while connected to Xbox LIVE (Silver and Gold profiles only).

Note: certain challenges require matchmaking connectivity, which means Silver profiles may not be able to complete them.
Currently available challenges are visible via the Start Menu.

There are a few challenges in Halo: Reach that may require some extra clarification. The section below lists those challenges and further clarifies their requirements.

Challenge Clarification

A. Difficulty

All challenges must be completed on Normal difficulty or higher unless otherwise stated in the challenge description text.

B. Misc
  1. Selecting the “Pod Kettle Black” challenge will not transport you to the correct lobby. You will have to navigate to the correct lobby on your own!
  2. “Fleet Feet” challenge must be completed solo! Co-op will not work.
  3. “Close Talking” displays as active in all gametypes but can only be completed in multiplayer matchmaking.
  4. “Textbook001” must be completed in a single playthrough without saving and quitting, but is not messaged as such. Sorry!
  5. “Camp Froman, Indeed” appears active in Firefight even though it’s multiplayer matchmaking only.
  6. “Score one for the kids” will randomly appear active when it’s not and sometimes pop the “Challenge failed” toast.
  7. Selecting a challenge in the challenges menu will automatically take you to the appropriate lobby for that challenge. Any challenge that would take you to the campaign lobby will pop the “Are you sure? If you continue, you will lose your saved progress from your current mission. Continue?” dialogue. This is only if you already have a saved campaign game. It will delete your saved game if you have one if you proceed, so heed this warning.
  8. Once challenges change (daily or weekly), the current number of challenges completed shown in the Active Roster will reset back to 0. This is by design. It’s only meant to show how many of the current challenges you’ve completed and not how many lifetime challenges you’ve completed.

Achievements

A few of the achievements in Halo: Reach may require some additional clarification.

Two Corpses in One Grave

If you hijack either of the Wraiths, you will not get credit for this achievement and must retry. Also, both Wraiths must be killed within 1.5 seconds of each other or it will not count.

A Spoonful of Blamite

You must not die between your first Needler supercombine kill and your tenth. Dying will reset your supercombine kill count.

Keep It Clean

Dying resets your Moa kill count. You must kill all the required Moas without dying.

If They Came to Hear Me Beg

If your lunge is too forward it will slow your fall and this achievement will not be triggered as you are no longer traveling at a terminal velocity. Try lunging straight down on the target Elite’s head as you are falling so you don’t lose terminal velocity. This usually takes multiple attempts and can be tough to trigger. Don’t give up!

General Achievement Issues

Some achievements, like previous Halo games, cannot be earned on Easy difficulty. All achievements that are required to be completed on a specific level will list the level by order (2nd Mission, 3rd Mission, etc). Keep in mind that “Noble Actual”, the opening cinematic, is considered the first mission. This means that in terms of the achievement text, the second mission is actually “Winter Contingency,” and so on.

Forge

Forge is a tool used to edit objects on maps to create new gameplay experiences. This is contains lots of advanced functionality and you should check Bungie.net for further explanation of how to use the Forge.

Objects Not Rendering

If you embed the largest forge pieces deep into the ground above the tunnel on the island in Forge World, those objects will stop rendering and become un-editable. To reclaim them, you must use the “Delete all of these” function to remove the now invisible forge piece. To do this, place one more instance of the same piece somewhere else on the map. Then move your crosshair over the forge piece while in Editor mode and press B. Then select “Delete all of these.”

Maps Can be Overwritten

Below are the steps for triggering an overwrite of a previously saved map. Basically, do NOT use “Save Map” after re-entering a map you left and had not previously saved when you HAD saved a map before starting the new one.

  1. Launch Forge
  2. Create a map and save it with a unique name and description
  3. Open any default (built-in) map variant in Forge
  4. Go to the Start menu and select End Game
  5. Re-enter Forge without changing the map
  6. Go to the start menu and select "Save Map"

You will have then saved over their previously map.

Again, to avoid this, do not hit “Save Map” when you are editing a new map you’ve never saved before. Use “Save As…” instead.

Cannot Pick Up Weapon

If weapons placed in Forge cannot be picked up, the problem is likely related to the physics state of that weapon.

To edit physics of an object, put the crosshairs over it so that they turn green while in editor mode and press X. The object properties window that comes up will have Physics as an option. Make sure that the weapon’s physics is set to NORMAL.

Split Screen Forge

In split screen, the draw distances are pulled way in. This means that many objects will not be within draw distance when they are spawned in editor mode. The best workaround is to not use split screen while in Forge.

Objects Flashing

If a large number of objects are visible all at once, they will appear to flash rapidly. This occurs on the Paradiso map variant of Forge World and on Spire. This generally only occurs in Forge mode as spawn points and objective markers are visible objects while in the Forge. If the map is played in a custom game (not Forge), this should not occur since the spawn points and objective markers will no longer be visible.

Map Not Saved

If you save during a host migration, the save will not complete. Make sure that the game is not host migrating when you decide to save your map.

Commendations

Commendations are new to the Halo series. They are a progression tracking system that looks at specific actions you takes and progresses a related commendation status based on these actions. For example, every time you kill another player with a melee you will earn progress toward your “Close Quarters” commendation. Commendations, once achieved, reward you with large Credit payouts.

Commendations have several levels and your progress towards the next level is displayed in the Commendations section of the Service Record (located in the START MENU under the PLAYER submenu. You must be in the main menu and not in a game to access your Service Record).

Below are the known issues associated with this system.

Stopped Earning Progress

You can earn up to Silver-level of your Campaign Commendations. After that, you will only earn Credits when your Commendations reach new level thresholds.

Onyx Commendation Awarded Twice

Onyx is the highest level. The Onyx level commendation is redisplayed when you max out your Onyx Tier commendation, but there is no higher level.

Cannot Earn Commendations

Offline profiles do not have access to this feature in Halo: Reach.

Miscellaneous

This section is for issues that don’t fit under any other heading.

No Credit for Mission Complete

If you completed a mission but didn’t get the achievement, you may have started from an insertion point rather than the mission starting point. Insertion points are selected from the Select Mission menu.

If you are unsure what missions you failed to complete properly (either by starting from the beginning or resuming a saved game) when trying to get the game completion achievements, check the Select Mission menu to see which missions have completion shields.

No File Share Access

Silver profiles without Bungie Pro (optional premium service available for purchase via the Start Menu in the File Browser submenu) and offline profiles do not get access to the File Share.

Files Missing

We can only display the files that are currently stored on your selected storage device. If you have multiple storage devices, try to keep all of your Halo: Reach content files (screenshots, films, map variants, etc.) all on a single storage device.

Temporary Film History is Empty

You need a HDD to use the saved films feature in Halo: Reach.

Straight from HBO to your face!

That crash from jumping the broken bridge may have knocked your systems a little too hard, as now they're completely inoperable - so you must complete this mission HUDless! But don't worry. Normal difficulty is your biggest threat in this challenge - just be patient, and you'll get through this! We promise!
