New Feature: Game Reviews
New Feature: Game Reviews
UpdateThank Cpt_Canuck for this idea, it was his suggestion.
I've forgotten who suggested this, but it seemed a fine idea so I went ahead and created a Game Review database type for chapters. Use it to post reviews and have members rate console games, PC games, board games, drinking games, whatever!
Seventh Column Motto Revealed
Seventh Column Motto Revealed
Total Codex just reminded me that I never announced the official choice for the Seventh Column motto. Whoops. The official motto (currently being worked into a pretty friggin' cool shirt design) is
"Tru7h. Carnage. Bungie."
News Posting Having Issues
News Posting Having Issues
Update: The problem has been resolved. Your news posting results should display properly now. I also fixed a small issue with the activity log not recording everything it was supposed to, so you can see more info now.
Some of you may have noticed that when you attempt to post a new news story that instead of seeing the "success" message, you see a page header and nothing else. I am aware of the problem and am working to correct it. Your news still is getting posted, so don't just blindly hit "reload", you'll end up double posting.
Group Activity Logs
Group Activity Logs
I've taken a few users' requests and made the group activity logs (previously only a staff tool) accessible to all group members. The activity log is an easy way to check up on what's new in your group, especially in your databases. The link can be found when you're visiting one of your chapters, in the left hand navigation bar, below Members.
Ask and You Shall Receive
Ask and You Shall Receive
FrogBlast noticed a new theme yesterday--Soffish. Though we'd accidentally posted the old version of this theme, his detective work convinced us to finish the new one. Now the water stuff item theme you've always wanted is finally here! Careful, transparent resin may leak out.
DoubleTree Number Correction
DoubleTree Number Correction
A big warm thanks to crbuke who pointed out that the number listed for the DoubleTree in our E3 story was incorrect. The correct number is (310) 395-3332.
7th Column Week in Review
7th Column Week in Review
Another week, another review. Speaking of reviews, we have some
new database types for you that allows you to set up lists of movies and books and rate them. As for the 7th Column, well, I'll assume that your lack of mail to
7thcol@bungie.com means that everyone is hard at work planning how to dominate at the upcoming E3 tournament. Don't forget to sign your chapter up at
/perlbin/blam.pl?file=/news/stories/bungie_party_at_e3.html! In other news:
- The Mob of Angry Peasants (/fanclub/415), is seeking members, and wants to advertise their upcoming events. They mention that "The Mob really likes media attention. It's the media that really gets things done in politics, and The Mob is aware of this. This is why The Mob is drawing attention to its upcoming Bureaucratic Upheaval. Everyone is emplored to assist in this upheaving of the bureaucracy." Uh, yeah... Moving on...
- Tigaj, founder of the Tigajim Assassins (/fanclub/800), is looking for Halo players in the vicinity of Greeley, CO.
- The Crocodile Bungie chapter (/fanclub/26) is having a LAN party in South Australia on the 23rd... uh, that would be today in the USA. Sorry about that guys. But if you're in Australia, check these guys out, Halo is coming there too!
And so ends another week, and my first time writing the review. Be sure to send us your postings for the week in review to
7thcol@bungie.com. Also, check back early next week for some new features for every user that 90% of you wanted. In related news, 75% of all statistics are fake.
Two New Databases!
Two New Databases!
I've ducked the "no new feature additions on Friday afternoon" censors and created two new database types, Movie Reviews and Reading List. Even better, both are hooked in to the poll system, so chapter members can rate books and movies. Enjoy!

No More Accidental Deletes
No More Accidental Deletes
Now, when you hit that "delete database" button, you'll be taken to a page asking if you're sure you know what you're doing. No more accidentally deleting databases! Sorry about this one, it was waaaay too long coming.
New Chapters
New Chapters
I just approved a ton of new Seventh Column chapters. If you had one waiting in the queue head on over to
/site/2 and check it out, your page should now be live.
One Born Every Second
One Born Every Second
Several users have been intentionally manipulating the activity meter to bump their chapters up to the top of the Most Active list. Some things never change. That list wasn't meant to be competitive, it's there to encourage group activity and point people towards the most active groups. If you want publicity submit something worth publicizing to 7thcol@bungie.com for the week in review. The offenders have been dealt with as appropriate. Avoid making this same mistake, next time we won't be so nice.
Continued Weeding
Continued Weeding
I've gone through the remaining inactive chapters founded pre-January, disbanding some and leaving staff-only news messages for others. If your chapter falls in this category but you don't want it disbanded please check your news, then message me with a darn good explanation (or bribe).
Simplified Links to Chapters
Simplified Links to Chapters
Nijhazer requested this feature this morning and Achronos thought up a quick solution. You can now use shortcuts to link to your chapters. Just type in
http://www.bungie.net/fanclub/x, where x is the desired chapter id (get this from the URL displayed when you view your chapter). So, for example, to link to Nijhazer's chapter from another site I'd type http://www.bungie.net/fanclub/5. You can also use this in a LINK tag on this site by typing
/fanclub/5.
Mad Disbanding Spree Part I
Mad Disbanding Spree Part I
I've been disbanding chapters inactive since last year. Once again I'm being lenient as heck, and I'm even leaving nice warning messages for those I suspect might still be around. If you're the one irresponsible for one of these chapters best let me know about it soon, or yours will be no more. Warnings have been left for chapters starting A through M, the rest will follow.
Soffish Is The Champion!
Soffish Is The Champion!
Soffish, that wiley friend of ours that does not harm human body, made a surprise comeback in our last poll. The poll asked which theme you would most like to see next. Soffish just barely snuck past The Flood, which ended in a close second. Candyman was relieved, as we actually started on a Soffish theme a while back, whereas we haven't the slightest clue what a Flood theme will look like. We have a few projects that take priority over any more themes but when we get some time we'll see what we can conjure up.
1000 Strong ... And Growing
1000 Strong ... And Growing
Today marked a momentus occasion--the Seventh Column, Bungie's army of loyal fans, is now 1000 members strong! The honor goes to Blasta_Thug, founder of The S |/\| a r |\/| of Marietta, Ohio (
/perlbin/blam.pl?file=/fanclub/580).
Disappearing Database Entries
Disappearing Database Entries
Update: All of the display issues with old database entries have been resolved; the entries should all be back now.
Some of you may have noticed that a bunch of your older database entries appear to be missing. Rest assured, the actual entries are still there. The problem is just a display issue, and your old entries should reappear as soon as the display problem is fixed.
Bug Fix: Disappearing Events
Bug Fix: Disappearing Events
Finally figured out why events were sometimes disappearing from the sidebar. The problem is fixed.
Week in Review Submissions
Week in Review Submissions
If the 7th Column Week in Review is going to happen again this week you're going to have to do the work! Seriously, if you have something you'd like considered for inclusion--an event you hosted or are hosting, a chapter seeking members, etc.--please email details today to 7thcol@bungie.com (yes, this changed from @microsoft.com, though both will work). Be sure to include your login name and your chapter's name, as well as any relevant or interesting details.
Access and Database Problems
Access and Database Problems
We're aware of an intermittent problem some of you are having accessing the site, and another with disappearing database entries. We're unsure of the cause in both cases. Rest assured we're doing our best to track things down. We'll have an update as soon as we figure more out.
New Database: Halo Gametypes
New Database: Halo Gametypes
We've got a new feature lined up for every chapter to assist you with keeping track of what game variants of multiplayer Halo are good. The Halo Gametypes database type allows you to input different game variants for all to see. People who can view your database can then rate individual variants. The results will automatically be tallied and averaged so you'll know if that variant will go over well at your next LAN party. If you have any problems using this new database type, message myself or Yeroen.
7th Column Week in Review
7th Column Week in Review
Here's a quick rundown of happenings in the 7th Column. This and the seeking members list below took me a while to compile, so please don't spam me with messages telling me what I missed. Instead we've created an alias specifically for that purpose! If you have something you think worth mentioning when we review the week's happenings please send it via email to
7thcol@microsoft.com. No promises it will be included, etc., etc. You know the drill. Anyway, on to the week in review!
GatheringsMiscellaneous Happenings- Sardaukar Legion West (/perlbin/blam.pl?file=/fanclub/201) is trying to build a consolidated Western US chapter.
