Map Spotlight Week 11 - Facility 17

a rascal cat writes:

Satisfying your thirst for box forts.

Is it Thursday already? Time really does fly. Anyways...

Today I will be presenting to you, Facility 17, a map made by both undr zid, and FC Elijah. Words cannot describe how smooth the gameplay is on this map, nor can they describe undr zid's undying love for box forts, and hidden messages within his maps.

I've done my fair share of talking though. How about I let undr zid take it from here? ;)

Q. Who are you and why do you Forge?

A. I go by "mo," but in the digital world I go by "undr zid". Before I get too far into this interview, I need to kindly stress that this map was a joint project that I shared with "FC Elijah", who is a good friend of mine and helps me run Forge Cafe. We forge because of Bungie subliminally fired pixelated images of monitors and spawn points into the neural makings of our cerebral cortex. This of course, sparked an adolescent thirst for constructing tunnels, bridges and forts that we thought did not exist anymore. What can I say? "Well played."

Q. What was your inspiration for Facility 17?

A. To be honest, we just sort of built it on the go. We never really planned it out, although that would of saved a whole lot of time I am sure. We decided to make a map, he took one side and I the other, and we just started droppin' blocks until I noticed it resembled a lab, sort of. After that, we got a basic plan going verbally, and went into serious face mode. It actually took much longer to put in the details, then the structures themselves. Anything that helped the overall look and feel of a real laboratory was given 2 thumbs up and put into place.

If you want to get specific, I will admit that the facility map from N64's 007 played a big role when trying to think of recognizable objects in a common laboratory. Such as the silos, catwalks, computers and so forth. But the main inspiration came from each other. We sort of fed off of the others' ideas and visions until we both were satisfied. Having a healthy competition is always a good thing. Especially when we both are trying to reach the same goal. Inspiration inspires right?

Q. What made you choose the location you did?

A. We started Forge up. We spawned. We started building. Riveting I know, but that's about it. In the end, it actually worked out really well, and I do not think any other location would of given us the result that we got. So, just say it was divine destiny if the original answer is too dull. That is what we are doing, and it seems to work fine.

Q. Did you employ any unusual Forge techniques in making Facility 17?

A. To me, the new Forge is all an unusual technique. Compared to Halo 3's Forge, the possibilities that are at your disposal are practically endless. I have seen Halo 3 maps from all aspects of design, from the simple and petite to the elaborate and grand size. But even the best could not compete with the "techniques" used today in Reach. So if you are good with a monitor, and are not taking advantage of the Forge in Reach, you are really missing out.

Q. Anything else people should know before they download?

A. Facility 17 was a very fun build for us to do together, and we really do hope you enjoy it. We are confident that our work will reward you with intense battles and ocular pleasure for your eyeballs. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for your time zid, and for all you community goers out there, please feel free to download the map below.

The best of the rest.

Optional and unofficial, but still totally awesome.

"As we all know, not everyone will get their creation featured in Bungie's Weekly Update. Fortunately, AmX15 will be creating some Photoshop art featuring everyone's work of art! Once you send your work of art off to Bungie, please send the same work of art to bungiecontest@gmail.com. He won't be showing the creation until after the next BWU, so you won't need to worry about anyone stealing your idea. Please remember that this is completely optional, and make sure if you send the creation to AmX15, you also send it to Bungie. AmX15 will NOT be forwarding any of the email he receives to Bungie."

Prepare to be taken away.

If you're sick of watching ten minute montages filled with loud music, this trailer might be all you need.

"This is the trailer for the sequel to the famous Halo: Reach Beta montage, 'Virtue and Vice.' As usual, the editing will be from passTHEword. As for the video, I thought it was incredible, just like 'Virtue and Vice.' passTHEword has never ceased to amaze me, and this video was no exception, showcasing an amazing flow and a lot of kickass effects and angles (look out for the badass pistol flip on Countdown). Enjoy!"

Bungie All Stars – Week 3

Wake me when you need me.

Hot on the heels of your magnificent Moa submissions this past Friday, we're ready to get you off and running for some Week 3 madness. And since the Animal Kingdom paid massive dividends last week, we're sticking to some similar subject matter. Your mission: a certified, Grade A Sacred Cow.

  1. Using any medium you can digitize and send via email, whip up some fan art of what you think Master Chief would look like without his helmet on.
  2. You have from this very second until Thursday, January 27th at 11:59pm PT to submit your entry for consideration (and public ridicule) to contest@bungie.com.
  3. Use the subject line “Bungie All Star Week 3” without the quotation marks to help me keep nice and organized.
  4. The size limit is 10MB and you should use your best judgment and discretion in terms of the nature of the content you choose to submit. After all, our mothers visit this site (yours too!).
  5. One submission per person. Please include your Bungie.net profile and gamertag in your email so we can grant you your reward of the star nameplate if and when you win.
You can go with a super serious straight take, or go straight for the funny bone. If you want to build John out of Forge blocks, that works too. Anything goes (except, you know, that). And don't worry about what you think Bungie originally had in mind for John, now's the time for your creativity to shine. Oh, and this week we're rewarding more than just one nameplate, so don't be intimidated by the awe-inspiring artisans of the Bungie Community. We'll be looking to highlight submissions from multiple categories, provided there's enough submissions to accommodate our aspirations.

Good luck!

LaCoz3's 1st Halo: Reach Montage

Gear61 Owns writes:

Where oceans bleed into the sky.

It's Monday. Here's a montage.

"This is LaCoz3's 1st Halo: Reach montage, edited by himself. The gameplay ranges from average to flat out amazing, and overall, it's great, featuring lots of sick sniper multikills, including a RIDICULOUS back to back to back exterminations killtrocity on Pinnacle. The editing is also really good, showcasing a lot of well done syncing and theater work. Similar to the gameplay, it has its off moments with some overdone effects and unnecessary emphasis, but is great overall. The soundtrack varies quite a bit and was pretty hit-or-miss for me, but I liked it overall. Also, I found this montage really amazing because it's 11 minutes long and all from one guy for both the editing and the gameplay. Similar to Sandman's 1st, this montage is definitely another contender for best Halo: Reach to date. Enjoy!"
