You have questions, they have answers

You have questions, they have answers

As you may or may not know, two of our Halo 2 animators at Bungie both hail from Canada and thus have earned the nickname "The Cananimators." You might recall them from the Get tactical, Marines! story last month in which they went out and fired a bunch of guns in the name of research. When they're not busy creating animations, playing Halo 2 ladder games, watching hockey, drinking beer or participating in some other Canadian pastime, both guys make an effort to support our fan community.

Thus a new content feature is born -
Ask the Cananimators!

The Cananimators are here for you and they are ready to answer your questions.

The first installment will be published in 2 weeks or so which means we've got a little time to get our first batch of questions from all of you. Visit the question database to submit your question.

The "Ask the Cananimators" question database can be found here.

Approximately every 2 weeks, the Canucks will go through and pick out questions that are worthy of their responses. The questions and answers will be posted on Bungie.net and we'll reset the database and do it all over again. We'll keep this going until we either run out of questions, the guys can't take it anymore, or this feature becomes a giant flaming failure.

Before you submit your questions, here are a few things to keep in mind to help increase the chances that your question gets answered:

1. You can ask all you want but every Halo 2 secret that's still a secret will continue to remain a secret.

2. You're not limited to just Halo 2 questions. Please, give us some variety. Want to know what they had for lunch? How bad General Tso's Army beat them in Halo 2? Which hockey team will take the cup? Ask away!

3. Don't spam the question list. One or two entries per person is the limit. If you start asking tons of questions we'll just ignore you and you'll be on the blacklist.

So that's it! Get your questions ready and head over to the database. We'll post the first installment in about 2 weeks.

We Want You (well, sort of)

We Want You (well, sort of)

We've got another new job opening here in Bungie land this week. At this rate we're going to need to knock down some walls or something to fit everyone in here! (unless someone doesn't mind sharing the Webmaster's closet) We've got big plans for the next evolution of Bungie.net and we need someone who can help deliver high quality content to our fans. Could you be that someone? Check out the job posting for more details.

Maybe he was delusional. But it was a funny story anyway and I thought it made a cool comic. Enjoy!

The Great Move

The Great Move

Sorry about the downtime earlier today. Remember last week when we had a DNS change? Well, today, we hooked up the servers that we moved into the new datacenter back into our server cluster. This means more people can view our site at once. So, again, sorry about the unannounced downtime.

A few of you might be experiencing some glitches when using the site this evening. We're not 100% sure but the evidence seems to point towards our destruction prone Webmaster. We're working to resolve the problem. Please be patient and come back again in a little while.

Marathon Matures

The guys over at the Marathon OpenSource project, Aleph One, have done a major update to the application. Although we've noted before that they had TCP/IP working before, it is now running much more stable and they have played a successful 7 player game over the internet.
There are executables for both Windows and OSX. Keep up the good work, guys.

Moving Day!

Moving Day!

On Wednesday afternoon, there will be one or two short periods of downtime for bungie.net for some server maintenance. This is all related to us moving our servers to a new location. You should see minimal impact other than a small performance loss over the next week due to the backup database server being slower than the primary (which will be offline). Performance will return to normal levels by the end of next week - if you even notice any performance loss at all.

Gotta remember to pack my own little bottle of dishwashing fluid or something whenever I go on a little trip! Anyways, the next soapbox is up. It's been considered "messed up", or "cute" or "awesome". I was going to call it "Halo: Life Evolved", or "Seven"... but "Bungie. Halo. Seven. Blam." seems more appropriate. Have fun! :)

As some of you may have noticed, the Bungie Store is not being very nice to some people about the discount for today. If you don't have an account on the store, create one first, then log out and then log back in before you attempt to do any shopping. That will ensure you have a place to enter your discount code.

Well, I finally took all afternoon to clear out the almost 200 chapters that needed clearing. If you don't have a chapter now, you've been rejected. Since we're all leaving for E3, I suggest you not submit a chapter until next week, as it won't get approved any time soon. See you at the fanfest. Oh, one more thing: the webcam is going on a little trip, so don't be surprised if it doesn't update for a bit. Stay tuned to bungie.net this week for your Halo 2 news - you haven't seen anything yet.

The Next Next Big Thing

The Next Next Big Thing

Well, apparently I spoke too soon. A few last minute issues have come to light, so we'll be postponing the Truth and Reconciliation renovation until at Thursday evening. Sorry about that. But we got lots of stuff coming in the next week, so this will give you time to prepare for the onslaught.

The Next Big Thing

The Next Big Thing

As E3 approaches, we thought now would be a nice time to change some things... specifically, Halo: Truth and Reconcilation is getting a facelift, its own domain, and nicer links. This will cause a short period of downtime starting at about 2pm Pacific time on Tuesday. After we're finished, everything will be nice and fast in that area of bungie.net, and you'll wonder how you ever used the old version.

Thursday Maintenance [Updated]

Thursday Maintenance [Updated]

I know things are quiet right now, but trust me, it is that pre-E3 lull. Behind the scenes, we've got great things going on. Towards that end though, the servers need a little poking and prodding. On Thursday night, starting at 6pm Pacific, you might notice the site become really slow and unresponsive. This could last as long as 12 hours (we're doing datacenter maintenance). After that, we should be primed and ready to go, server wise, for E3.

A Window into the Bungie culture

A Window into the Bungie culture

Admit it, y’all think that we here at Bungie are just having fun all day long. Not a thought about business… just sitting here full of ourselves, having the time of our lives. Far from it. We’re actually thinking about your mom too and what she wore last—ow!! All right all right. Geez. I’m just kidding! Don’t forget that I’m a girl, and I’ll whoop your ass like – ow! That does it! :::shing!!!::: :::thwack!!::: ::: eyaaaah!::: :::thud::: ::: shuck ::: <ahem> There’s a reason I have razor-sharp samurai sword at my desk, fool. Now, where was I? Oh yeah. Fun. Yes! We’re all about fun! And carnage. But this is work after all. And even our FUN has a purpose. It’s all part of the P.L.A.N.

So, just to set things on course, in case the Comics section is looking like they’re getting out of hand. I just want to say that each one, even the very first one that Evil Otto penned, is really a Window into the Bungie Culture. All the better to prepare the masses for our eventual takeover. There will be more Halo Babies comics. There will be more Bungie Adventures starring Skip and the Online Team along with other Bungie personalities that I hope you’ll come to know and love. And just to throw in that Skittle in a jar-full of M&M’s, I present: Great Moments in Bungie History. This is the first excerpt from the fabled Bungie Handbook created by The Man. These moments are based on REAL LIFE events. They’re so crazy that we had to make rules about them to protect employees and to indemnify Bungie from any liabilities.

Update: The site is back online and the changes are live!
This is just a reminder that all Bungie web sites will be intermittently up and down starting at about 2am through 10:30am (PST) while we perform some updating. I know, it is kind of a long period, but trust me, you'll like some of the stuff we have ready for you. More on that after the update.

Size Does Matter

Last week's poll is a wrap and an overwhelming 67% of you prefer to play Halo using the original controller over it's pint sized sibling. Controller-S is favored by 29% while 4% of you use a racing wheel for an extra challenge. Apparently size really does matter.
