Beta Damage - Day One

Breaking down the damage done.

Whoa. We knew that the Halo: Reach Beta launch would be kind of a big deal, but you came out of the gate and absolutely crushed our expectations. Also crushed on day one: our servers. Thanks for being patient as we worked out some of the kinks that inevitably come with a global launch effort, and thanks for jumping in and playing the Beta with us. We've already collected reams of data and your participation continues to help us make the game even better for the full release this fall.

Since you kicked so much ass, we've got a nice little stats breakdown to help put it in the proper perspective. Here are the numbers from the first twenty four hours.

1,170,112 Total Players!


  • 14,205,611 Player Games
  • 157,972,986 Kills
  • 936,864,266 Seconds Spent Playing

Out stats guru, RocketMoose, tells us that the average player kicked in fourteen games during the inaugural run! That amounts to about 29.67 years of total time. Overall, we saw more players on the first day then we did over the entirety of the Halo 3 Beta. Thanks for the investment. We'll make sure it pays dividends.

How to Give Good Feedback

Help us, help you.

So you’ve downloaded the Halo: Reach Beta, played some games, and now you want to sound off. Great! We want to hear from you. Here are a few tips to help you make your voice heard.
Be Succinct
Cut to the chase. As you can see, our Beta Feedback forums are awash in lengthy reviews, passionate diatribes, and totally doable feature requests. Make your subject line clear and concise and it’ll help your feedback cut through the muck.
Good Feedback

Subject: Stockpile Scoring Issue

Body: In Stockpile someone else on your team can pick up flags you’ve placed in the stockpile and put them back to get credit for the score.


Oh, that’s not cool. We’ll fix it for ship. Good feedback!
Great Feedback
The only thing that would have made the above even better would be a link to a Saved Film showing the exploit in action. In fact, every good report is made better by simply attaching a relevant Film Clip and the link to the game itself from your history page.

Since Bungie.net doesn’t automatically link the two, please include the Saved Film AND the link to the game in question from your stats page.

A good example of the effectiveness of this method is spawn reporting. A thread about how spawns “totaly suk” isn’t all that helpful. A thread highlighting a particularly egregious spawn you experienced while you were hanging out in the Rock Garden on Powerhouse, complete with a link to the game in question and a Film Clip of the event occurring right before our very eyes, is exactly the sort of thing we’re looking for.
Not so Good Feedback

Subject: “Who misses the legendary BR?”

Over the last week i have been thinking after looking at some game play footage what the ... have Bungie done why have they tried to make a game like CoD. But since i have got the beta I am surprised to say i am totally wrong it is still halo but i am sad to see the end of the LEGENDARY BR!!


What do we learn from this kind of feedback (aside from the obvious stuff I won’t cover for fear of badly bruising a young child’s ego)? Well, nothing. Matters of opinion are all fine and dandy, but they’re not very constructive and they don’t provide us with any useful data. The same goes for overly elaborate posts that break down the current weapons palette, bullet-by-bullet, with explicit instructions regarding potential modifications that you feel would make them better. We’ll be able to see exactly how effective or ineffective each weapon is using the wealth of statistical data we are collecting.

Reviews of our work-in-progress beta software, both positive and negative, are welcome, but we ask that you keep them isolated to the Review Thread we’ve pinned so feedback and bug reporting doesn’t become buried under the tremendous weight of your glowing praise or damning criticism.
Done Before
It should also be noted that the issue you’re reporting has likely already been identified. Take a minute to search the Beta Feedback Forum and glance at our thread setup to cover and consolidate known issues.

Re-posting known issues only serves to push other relevant topics off the front page, making them more difficult to find. You aren’t getting sweet credit for being first, you’re likely making it more difficult for us to key in on relevant issues, including your own. Zero e-credits for you.

Seek out established threads where users are already discussing the issues you’re experiencing and it will be much appreciated. Feel free to add your own data and link us to any relevant film clips you have so we can see the problem first hand. Naturally, threads covering widespread issues should bubble up to the top and stay afloat.
Be Nice!
We really shouldn’t have to tell you this. It’s just good common sense. People are more inclined to listen to you if you communicate with them respectfully. Verbal diarrhea and vitriolic rants are not only unhelpful, they’re also uncivilized. The intent of our feedback forum is to give our awesome users a sounding board to let us know what’s not up to snuff for retail release. Wading through your typographically challenged rant makes that a significantly less than enjoyable experience. More importantly, it requires that we sift through useless information to get to the good stuff.

Please play nice. We can and will nuke you with the Banhammer. And we'll enjoy it. We’re cranky like that.

Oh, and one more thing. While we’re definitely interested in gauging the community response to the Halo: Reach Beta, some things are ultimately subjective and implemented by design. If you’re furiously typing up a tome with the belief that your expert opinion on weapon balance or fundamental game mechanics desperately needs to be heard, you’re likely throwing your keystrokes away.

We are listening, we are watching, but we are not going to make major changes based on your day one review – even if you have a really high k/d ratio, tens of thousands of Halo 3 games tallied, and credentials that date back to the halcyon days of Halo: CE.

Beta is Online and Operational

Some string, duct tape, and a whole lot of elbow grease later.

The Beta is not quite fully operational, but it should be moving at a pretty good clip now that our online team has applied some technological fixups. You should still expect suboptimal performance, but you should also now be getting games with relative ease. Once again, thanks for being patient. Unless of course you weren't patient at all and you made like a million posts to the feedback forum to complain about the outage even though there were already like a million posts already made complaining about the outage. If you were that guy, thanks for nothing!

Again, we're not out of the woods just yet. If you experience any problems connecting or getting into games, please let us know about it. Politely, of course. Otherwise, have fun in the Beta!

Getting Games in the Beta

Some quick tips to shorten your wait.

So, yup some stuff is on fire here at the office and if the forums are any indication, we were totally unprepared, don't care about our real fans, and should totally give everyone their zero dollars back with a side of free Xbox LIVE. While none of that's the case, our test team just broke away from an epic struggle with some molten server metal and 600,000 players to deliver us some quick tips to help you get games going a little bit faster.

  1. Don't restart your search, even if load times are long. The initial load for map and game type will take a really long time, which is super lame, but once you've made the connection, the files will be cached to your hard drive and the next time you load to same map/game type, it should be nice and fast.
  2. Don't reboot or reload the beta. It won't help and it will actually clear your cache, making your wait times much longer.
  3. Don't leave your party. Since everybody in the party has to load the same files, your wait is tied to other player's download process as well. Stick with the same crew and things should iron out.

Rest assured that we're working on the issues and as soon as things start to smooth out, we'll let you know. Thanks for your patience.

Halo: Reach Beta Weekend FAQ

The Reach Beta officially begins on Monday but many of you have questions NOW. Answers inside.

The Reach Multiplayer Beta is officially just two days away but with all the recent commotion around "friends and family" codes and what seems like the entire world (except for you) playing early, there are a lot of questions and some confusion arising in the community. Let's see if we can provide some answers so you can get back to enjoying your weekend.


When does the Beta officially begin?
ODST owners will be able to access the Reach beta "late morning" PDT on Monday, May 3rd. Just put your ODST campaign disc in and select the Reach Beta menu option.


"Late morning?" Can't you tell us the exact time?
Late morning (Pacific Daylight Time) is as exact as we can get right now. As soon as the switch is flipped and the beta is active, we'll be sure to spread the word.


If the beta doesn't start until Monday then why is everyone else already playing?
This weekend there are some people playing the Reach Beta as part of what has been dubbed the "Friends and Family" early beta. Over the past few days Bungie and tons of community sites and media sites have given away codes all across the web. In addition, MGS has issued codes to various partners and retailers. Ultimately this amounts to thousands of people but it's still a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of people expected to join beginning on Monday. The purpose for this early access is to allow us to work out any kinks and knock off the dust before the flood gates open on Monday morning. As such, it was intentionally limited to a manageable, small population.


"Small population?" Looks to me like nearly 20,000 people have been playing the Beta!
That may very well be the case given all the various programs going on out there (the two thousand or so codes Bungie gave out and then all the codes MSFT has distributed to retailers and media outlets). Twenty thousand people sounds big but compared to the few million people that could potentially all start playing as of Monday, it's a very tiny fraction of the overall beta population.


I bought ODST and I'm a huge fan of Bungie - why didn't I get a code and why do I have to wait until Monday?
The Beta was always scheduled to begin on May 3rd and that's still the case. Nothing is being taken away from you. Unfortunately there were only so many codes available for this preliminary weekend and given the enormous size of our community, only a tiny fraction could be included. We're sorry that we couldn't hook up everyone but the good news is that you won't have to wait much longer.


Is Bungie giving away anymore codes?
We are not giving away anymore codes. It's possible that some community or media sites are still giving away codes but Bungie has depleted the small stash we had. Any codes you find on Bungie.net are certainly already claimed by now so please enjoy your weekend and don't waste your time scouring the site for a left over code.


Why can't you just turn the beta on early?
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. There's a lot happening behind the scenes with a lot more groups involved than just Bungie. We built this small test weekend into the schedule specifically to make sure Monday's launch is as smooth as possible. As soon as the switch is flipped on Monday we will spread the word.


What's this I hear about Halo 2 people getting codes for the beta?
Microsoft contacted Halo 2 players a month or so ago and informed them that they would be receiving a Reach beta code as a small token of appreciation in light of the game being decommissioned from Xbox LIVE. If you received one of these messages, you're one of those people. If you didn't, or have no idea what any of this means, don't sweat it.


I'm a huge Halo 2 fan, I've played a million games... I never got a mail from Microsoft. What gives?
Unfortunately I don't have any insights into the parameters or qualifications that warranted getting one of these emails. This was a nice gesture extended by the Xbox LIVE team and Bungie doesn't have any involvement.


Ok, I'm one of the Halo 2 people - when can I expect my code?
Microsoft has informed us that they will begin mailing out those codes on Monday May 3rd. However, please note that due to the large volume, it may take a few days to reach everyone.


As soon as the beta is live on Monday morning we will spread the word. Until then, enjoy your weekend!

'Welcome to the Beta' Video is Live!

Got ODST? Get your Halo: Reach Beta tour on!

Actress, comedienne, and weapons expert, Aisha Tyler, is ready to get you up to speed for the Halo: Reach multiplayer Beta. Her introductory battlefield tour is available right now, exclusively through Halo 3: ODST's main menu, the very same place you'll get be getting access to the Beta itself on May 3rd. Pop in your ODST campaign disc and look for "Preview the Beta" in the main menu. Once the Beta is live on May 3rd, the text will change, prompting you to "Play the Beta."



One small note about the Welcome to the Beta video: our test team tells us that there are a handful of players who may not be able to access this video through ODST for reasons that are way too complex and technical to get into. Likely, you won't have any issues. The reason we bring it up is so you won't freak out in the unlikely event that it does happen to you - even if you aren't able to watch the video, you WILL still be able to access the Beta itself through the ODST main menu.

Gametypes

  • Grifball (50%) - Teams vie over a bomb, attempting to plant and detonate the bomb on the other team's arm point. Players spawn with Gravity Hammers and Energy Swords. Player traits: No grenades,  infinite ammo, 200% damage and no shields. Ball carrier traits: Orange forced color, 2x shields and 150% movement speed. Assault bomb arms instantly, and one successful detonation ends the round. Team with the highest score after five rounds wins. Three minutes per round.
  • Mayan Grifball (10%) - Players have 110% move speed. Ball carrier has 150% move speed. No Vehicles
  • Grifball Up There (30%) - Bomb reset time is 10 seconds.
  • Aerial Grifball (10%) - Players have 75% gravity and 100% move speed. Ball carrier has 50% gravity and 100% move speed. Bomb reset time is 10 seconds. Custom Powerup Traits: 3 seconds of Weapon Pickup.

Maps

  • Grifball Court (Foundry) - Variant of Foundry made specifically for Grifball tournament play.
  • The Grif Cave (Sandbox) - Grifball in Sandbox's crypt.
  • Chichen Itza (Sandbox) - Grifball court styled in the fashion of an ancient arena.
  • Nøxy's Court (Sandbox) - Will the real Mayan ballcourt please stand up.
  • Ultim8 Grifball (Sandbox) - Oh! Now I get it. They named it Ultim8 because the court has eight sides.
  • Grifball High (Sandbox) - Grifball in Sandbox's skybubble.
  • Grifball Naught (Sandbox) - "How did I get into the game before the map?"
  • Grifball Club (Sandbox) - 7-Wood starts. Aerial settings. 8 sides. All the weirdness packed into one game.
