Last week I mentioned that the warm-up game usually predicts the winner of the entire match. I only mentioned it because last week's Humpday was a deviation in that theory. This week's (spoilz), however, went to strengthen it.
Game 1: CTF Classic
Game Duration: 2:21
General Tone of Game: Skillz
Best gametype ever. I love me some Needler action, I almost stuck Ninja at the start so I could get dual Needlers from the outset, but I'm a man of honor. Both teams worked very quickly. NeoGAF scored the first capture but we got our own only seconds after.
It was one of those games where your flag never seemed to be at home. There was fighting back and forth, after the initial captures both teams couldn't seem to get their flags all the way back to their respective bases before they were returned. We both finally got our second capture at about the same time. The capture cost us, however, as NeoGAF was able to kill most of us just after the capture with a few well-placed (lucky) grenades.
While we all waited to respawn they grabbed the flag and moved it as quickly as they could, taking advantage of our absence. By the time we respawned they were already at the front of their base with the flag. Those that respawned lofted grenades at them - why nobody chose to fire their Needlers is beyond me, the flag carrier was in no condition to dodge the needles - but they were able to capture the flag nonetheless and end the game.
3 to 2. NeoGAF wins.
Game 2: CTF Classic
Beaver Creek, Shotguns
Game Duration: 7:21
General Tone of Game: Unpredictable
The twist in this gametype was that it didn't have the usual twist. Shields were on (the overshield spawned as well) so there were less random grenade kills. This was another fast game, we used a pretty standard strategy. Zoom Demon, iamnuts and I spent the game on offense, using the flag-hucker strategy. We executed it once pretty well. I dropped into their base from above, grabbed the flag, then tossed it back out to Zoom Demon waiting above who returned it most of the way for an eventual capture. According to the game viewer, NeoGAF was just running it out of the base with nothing fancy, but it got the job done.
We drew first blood, but NeoGAF came back strong. We were able to steal the flag from them nearly as many as they stole it from us but they did a better job of protecting their flag carrier. It was tied at one all for about five minutes until NeoGAF successfully took off with our flag twice in the last couple of minutes to take the win.
3 to 1. NeoGAF wins.
Game 3: KOTH Tactics
Turf, Battle Rifle start
Game Duration: 9:32
General Tone of Game: Tactful
We went to Ninja for our gametype, he chose KOTH Tactics, straight out of Action Sack. The most important aspect of this gametype is that time multiplier is on, so the more people you have in the hill the more time you're getting. We actually faired reasonably well in this match. We were in the lead for parts of the game and we didn't end up losing by much.
Turf is a great map for KOTH, as every hill area is defensible but no one team can easily dominate any of the hills, even if they get set up. NeoGAF eventually gained a decent lead over us. They did seem to do best when the hill was by the Warthog spawn. I believe it was because some of us kept charging them at ground level instead of choosing to take the high ground which was just another few seconds out of our way. In doing that we gave their players in the hill a clear shot at us and forfeitted an advantage which we should have exploited.
They were almost a minute and a half ahead of us and only a few seconds from the win when the hill moved to the warehouse. Then it was our turn to control an area for a significant chunk of time. We had a few people in the warehouse getting time while I was set up on the ramp next to the warehouse ambushing NeoGAF guys and getting hugely lucky that no one came up from behind me and smacked me in the back of the head. Someone eventually got past me though and jumped into the hill with everyone, I ran in there to assassinate him but a few grenades were tossed in there and we all blew up. Then they ran in for the last few seconds and the win.
5:00 to 4:15. NeoGAF wins.
Much thanks to the NeoGAF crew for participating in the Humpday with us and giving us a great match. They're a pretty cool group, fun to play with despite the fact that they crushed us. Have a look at their site and forums if you want to learn more about them.
